Car batteries are worth money if you take them to a recycler.  I can't remember how many dollars per pound, but it's worth not throwing them away.  You might have thrown away $40 or $50.

Also, old Weber grills can go for a few hundred dollars.  I was blown away by the prices people were paying for some vintage grills.  Insane what people pay for Webers

His grill was an old "Members Mark" (Sams Club) grill manufactured by Grand Hall, with rotten cast iron burners, cracked and missing ceramic flame spreaders, a hose that had more black tape than original hose left, and a frame so rusty it was held up by a series of bricks and wood blocks.  He bought it used for $100 13 years ago.  It was done.

I really don't care about the batteries.  I was just happy the dump accepted them.  Our city dump drop-off pit is only 4 miles from my house.

I wish it was gone from here.  When I went to Aldi at lunch, a car drove by me in the parking lot, playing their (c)rap music with a lot of base and the windows down.

What I miss is a much simpler way of life.

My favorite memory is back when I was 12 on a warm summer day in 1983.  My Dad had been TDY and was coming home in the afternoon.  The chores were done, and in a couple of hours I would have to take a shower so that we could pick him up at the airport.  Until then, I could ride my go kart though the fields by my house.  No cares.  No worries.

Its hard for me to believe that 36 years ago.  I remember it crystal clear like it was yesterday.

You can still get the real deal though. The small glass bottle six packs that are made in Mexico still use cane sugar, and yes, you can taste the difference.

This is true.

Back in the 80's we HAD to look to the past for better cars.  Today, I completely understand why the young guys aren't as into the muscle cars of the early 70's and late 60's.

Today for around $10-15k they can buy a used car with 300-400 hp, handles better, is more dependable, and the odometer doesn't rollover at 99,999 miles, because it'll go longer than that without an overhaul.  And on top of all that it gets better gas mileage.

Cars today are better in every way.  While I think most of them can expect at least a couple hundred thousand dependable miles, I think much beyond that, they're disposable.

In some ways we have more personal freedom than our parents or grandparents, less in other ways.

Some historical perspective is very handy when making that claim.

Just look at gun laws. They're actually loosening and going constitutional in many areas of the country - something that wasn't around in 1950, or 1970.

We win some, we lose some.
