I'm a car guy...see, the thing is--we had to, back then.  I've got a 2013 Tacoma that's never had anything but tires, fluids, and filters.  It's never needed it.

While I love my old project cars (that I can work on)...Man...God bless fuel injection and modern cars.

The really good ones were made of orange bubble gum, and then rolled in powdered sugar, then wrapped in a rolling paper.  You could "puff" out a cloud of "smoke" when you blew on them.  I very clearly remember these, but I've never met anyone else who does.  We used to "smoke" them at the bus stop when we were little kids--our bus driver would jokingly tell us to "field strip your butts!" before getting on the bus (whatever that means).  Early '70s.

I should have posted this, dammit.  Dreaming about all the shinies in  Tognotti's in Sacramento, CA...or just checking out the rides in the parking lot...sigh.

Best times of my life...and no damned pictures.  People didn't take photos of everything back then, because it cost money...There just isn't a good record of those days.  I tried to find some for an '80s nostalgia thread here a few years ago...nothing.

For me, it’s the personal freedom of not having a cell phone. If I’m not home, I’m not home. I’ll be back when I get back. That I didn’t return your phone call on the same afternoon doesn’t mean I’m pissed at you. Etc.

I don’t like that people can communicate with me with the absolute Expectation that I not only got the message but that I have to respond,.... whether it’s my boss, my friends, my sisters, a business etc. maybe I have other plans or just don’t want to deal with you assholes right now?

I’m ready to live on my terms again.

Freedom.  There used to be a certain kind of freedom in this country that we sadly took for granted.  You could go to the bank, get some cash, hop in the car, and drive as far as you wanted and nobody could find you until you wanted found.  Sure you might make a phone call every few days or throw a postcard in the mail, but that was voluntary.

We've been surrounded by a regulatory environment that intrudes into every aspect of our daily lives now.  The government has grown tremendously since the 70's and most of it is just administrators administrating administrative code that has the effect of law.

The Disney movie "Song of the South".

Go ahead, try:  You cannot buy, rent, stream, or see it anywhere that I know of.

I saw it once as a kid and I fully expect that (if it hasn't happened already) every copy and all the masters will eventually be destroyed.

That's it!  Fantastic!  Watch it before it disappears because it probably will.

I see that was uploaded in 2016.  IIRC the last time I tried to find it was two to three years prior to that.

Glad to see you can actually watch it somewhere.

I remember an outcry several years ago that the PC crowd had made it virtually disappear.

I found it in a Disney box set at Walmart.
The hysteria over that movie is almost completely false. It is easily available. The only "ban" is that Disney won't release it in theaters ever again, have it on their upcoming streaming service, or let it be shown on TV. But you can get it pretty easily.

I also remember a time when you couldn't find it. Here's what I think... Disney saw the whole deal surrounding this movie on the internet, and saw a money making chance. So, they quietly put it back in circulation. No big announcement or promo, just put it out on DVD. And whenever people would see it, they would buy it, thinking they had found something rare. Disney is about money, over all else.

I seem to remember a live action remake version of "Song of the South" or something very similar being in theaters sometime in the early '80s.

Song of The South was always live action with some animation. It was like a prototype version of Roger Rabbit. And Disney did rerelease it in theaters in the 70s and 80s. There's only ever been one version.
