I remember reading about that and the Mazda 626 all wheel steering versions in Car and Driver in 1988 (if I remember correctly).

Had one of those Z-24s. They were nice, and with the 2.8 they were reliable.

Mercedes 450 SLC

Granted, it's a Mercedes, which you might not think of when you think of a "nothing" car.  But they're available in good condition with 5-digit mileage for under 15k, so I think it should qualify.

It had a 4.5 liter V8 that made all of 180 HP... but I still dig 'em, and if I had the expendable cash and garage space, I'd own one.

Wealthy friend here scooped up a late '80s custard yellow 450 SL with a beautiful tobacco brown interior...176,000 miles...for $3K and change. I thought he was nuts, but it turns out those things are actually mechanically very strong. It doesn't have quite the panache of an early '70s pagoda-roofed 280 SL, but those are demanding serious money now.

Great lines, comfortable, manual top...perfect for a weekend cruiser.

- 73’ Duster, lime green, 318, my first car and I’d buy one today, but they got pricey after more popular cars became cost prohibitive.
- El Camino - always wanted one
- had a 70 1/2 Pontiac Formula 455.   Wouldn’t mind doing that again.
- CRX - I don’t want one, but the wife had one.  Crazy amount of cargo space for a small car.  But small it was and a cube van literally drug her off the highway, while exiting.  He never saw her and the CRX got caught in his wheel well.

1989 Dodge Daytona G/S, I bought one from the PX in West Germany.  Perfect car for a single E-5, just a little over 10 grand, insurance was dirt cheap.  I could have bought a corvette or a BMW, then I would have been THAT  buck Sargeant.

I had an 88 T-Bird Turbo Coupe when I was in college. It was a dog, but cruised well on the interstate. I wouldn't mind having one again some day if the right car came along.

back in the 70s when you couldnt get more than 200hp in any car from the manufacturer, the was a guy in atlanta, turbo tom that would turbo those, 240zs and b210s. he had a custom built 510, dual turbos, some sort of v6, adapted mercedes fuel injection with a standalone ECU, also had 2 stage NOS, custom exhaust. thing was a beast. they have this walter mitty race thing at road atlanta and he took it there and beat everything including lambos. i had a 510, rebuilt the motor and suspension but didnt turbo it. i did turbo a 240z though. back in the day during the great HP drought of the 70s, custom turbo systems where the thing.

the comments below say it was a l20b which i may have been at one time. its final build was a v6.

I had a 1984 Subaru in the mid 90's.  I loved driving that little thing.  It was just fun.  I had a girl friend that had this thing for blowing me when we went through a car wash. So here I was at 22 yrs old with this old piece of crap car but that damn thing was so clean.

I had a friend ask me why it was clean all the time and he died laughing when I told him.   This one needs a good wash.

My first car. Bought it from my sister for $125 dollars when I was 16.

I want a mid 90s Camary with a stick.  Bonus points for coupe.  My dad purchased a company and they had a brand new one with a stick that none of the employees wanted for a company car so he took it as his commuter car.  He had a blast hooning the little Camary.

I think the Volvo 200 series station wagon (technically, a Volvo 245 I guess)  is one of the greatest cars ever made.

One of the folks here on ARFCOM ( Exorpmtech ) has a Officer using a 245 as a battering ram on a door in his Avatar.

I dated a girl in High School whose parents wanted us to drive their in 70's 245 on dates figuring it was a 'safe car'.

However since it was a Station Wagon, two teens could fold down the rear seats at the back of a dark drive in and sure have some "fun" (which I'm sure her parents would NOT have approved of...   )

I had a 1995 Dodge Avenger with the stick transmission..    I swear some designer was drugged out when spec's came out..   It has the Mitsubishi Eclipse transmission, a Dodge Neon SRT engine {without the governor} , Mitsubishi Galant chassis, A Viper/Stealth ground effect package.

Not a racer, but I could keep cruise control at 120mph on the I-10 west of El Paso heading towards San Antonio.

I like to look at mine but some day soon I need to come to terms with it and part ways.  It's nothing more than a money pit.  I passed on a damn good deal a long time to buy a genuine Ferrari Testarosa for $5000, just needed a motor and interior.  If I had bought that and stored it while fixing it I would be money ahead right now.

I even went and looked at it, instead I spent money on a damn AR50 and gun shit.  I guess I was more than stupid in those days.
