It takes work but you can farm out the one thing you can't do at home with homeowner level tools: the barrel. It has to be shortened (obviously) and have some new registers turned for the FSB/gas block and a slot for the handguards. Everything else - even the shortened piston - is doable with very little tooling. You'll need a cheapo 10T press to replace the barrel/pin once it's all set. But you can do it. ETA: Obviously any little welder will do it for the shortened/welded tube as well. Even a $70 Harbor Freight FCAW. |

I cut one down to 14" and mig welded a flash enhancer/loudener and front sight. Fucker is LOUD. Cant imagine how loud a shorter barrel is.

The proper way to cut Obrez is to use a hacksaw to make a circular cut, but not all the way down. Then dip the barrel in water and fire. It will form nice crown. This process was described in one of the musiums in Russia that I visited. |
