Sports is really gonna suck in the next 10-15 years as all these ‘special’ named kids come of age.

A few years ago a Cardinal got called up during the expanded roster that has my same first and last name. I really wanted him to become a star so I could buy his jerseys and shit.
Less than 40 plate appearances in 3 years, then traded around the minor leagues like a hot potato and retired ![]() |

His brother was JUCO player of the year in Florida and drafted by the Braves last year...CJ Alexander. |

The Cubs are the Yankees of the NL.
Or the Yankees are the Cubs of the AL. I can never keep it straight, except to say it is a truth universal that the Cubs and Yankees both suck. |

I saw this article on pitching today and found it interesting.
Pitching Fucking Maddux. ![]() Greg Maddux had a 3.23 E.R.A. in his first three innings and a 2.86 from the seventh inning through the ninth. And while he possessed a good fastball, it was not a three-digit express train. One spring training in the mid-1990s, Maddux, who in a 23-year career piled up 355 fairly meaningful wins, asked to speak with the team’s young pitchers. Mazzone nodded. Sure thing, Mad Dog, whatever you want. The coach lined up the young guys and Maddux walked over. “You know why I am a millionaire? Because I can put my fastball wherever I want to,” Maddux told them. “Do you know why I own beachfront property in L.A.? Because I can change speeds. O.K., questions?” |

Top 3 pitchers that gave up HRs to Barry Bonds- Maddux-9 Smoltz-9 Schilling-8 View Quote Gwynn owned Maddux. Gwynn faced Greg Maddux 107 times in his career -- more than any other pitcher. He batted .415/.476/.521 against the four-time Cy Young Award winner and Hall of Famer. That's easily the highest average against Maddux for any player with at least 70 plate appearances. Zero strikeouts too. Always loved this story. The righthander was discussing how changing speeds and having control are far more important than velocity, because no hitter can tell the exact speed of a pitch. Well, except one… “You just can’t do it,” Maddux said. “Sometimes hitters can pick up differences in spin. They can identify pitches if there are different release points or if a curveball starts with an upward hump as it leaves the pitcher’s hand. But if a pitcher can change speeds, every hitter is helpless, limited by human vision. “Except for that (expletive) Tony Gwynn.” |
|
Yeah, Ive always loved that quote. Ive posted it a bunch.
And Tony Gwynn isnt a Padre. Hes Mr. Padre tyvm. Ive also wondered how the modern day shift would treat Gwynn. If it would wreck his average, so I looked up his spray charts. The answer is no. Tony Gwynn would still dominate today with the shift. He was just that good. |
