Its difficult for them to stay very strong for a long period of time.  (usually)

Of course, they can weaken then strengthen, repeat, repeat....

current steering winds for a moderate hurricane

everything depends on what the high that is sitting in the atlantic does, as to if this is a gulf coast hurricane, or an east coast one

I'm pretty safe in Nebraska too I'd imagine.

Give me tornado's any day of the week over hurricanes and 4ft+ of rain in a couple of days!

Early good news:

From Irma's current position, US landfall is unlikely. However, Irma is turning WSW

which would put the storm into a much more favorable area for development.

A little bad news: Irma skipped right from tropical wave to Tropical Storm, so it is a robust cyclone, and most of the models show it intensifying into a hurricane.

Bears watching.

Having lived in NW Arkansas and the Arkansas River Valley, and now the Texas Gulf Coast, I really don't know which one I would take. Maybe hurricanes, because we typically have SOME warning. I wasn't as prepared for Harvey as I should have been, but that's my fault. We are blessed that we made it through unscathed while 40 miles to my east, people are dying. I'm positive their choice would counter mine right now.

The first time I took my girlfriend (now wife) to Arkansas, we had a tornado roll through on Mother's Day while we were at my brother's house. We heard sirens, made drinks, and all 6 of us headed for the oversized pantry under the stairs. She wondered why we were so nonchalant. My response was "We're either going to live or die, and there's really nothing we can do about it."

Historical paths for storms within two degrees of Irma...1851 to 2016

It would be interesting to know if the ones that made it to the USA also had a high pressure system as shown by cm above.

I'm trying to lessen my ignorance, so please bear with me.

Right now, Irma could go anywhere. What we (us in the Gulf States) are watching for is entry into that 16N x 62W zone that past trends will almost guarantee likely point to a Gulf State Florida / Southeastern State landfall, correct?

I hope the bitch turns hard north, makes some pretty rainbows off the New England coast and dies a quiet Arctic death.

There is also a depression forming in the Bay of Campeche off the Yucatan. It may also bear watching towards week's end as it could bring significant rainfall to Texas and Louisiana.
