Right now, Irma could go anywhere. What we (us in the Gulf States) are watching for is entry into that 16N x 62W zone that past trends will almost guarantee likely point to a Gulf State Florida / Southeastern State landfall, correct?

I do not know about that but look at the historical paths I posted above.  If you need to be prepped for hurricanes then do that independent of Irma.  Give it a week to know where it may go.

Thank you for your updates. Been lurking S2K.org since Harvey began and coupled with folks like you, there's a wealth of knowledge on these things that I could never comprehend.

Good words that I likely would not have heeded before Harvey.

Historical paths for storms within two degrees of Irma...1851 to 2016

It would be interesting to know if the ones that made it to the USA also had a high pressure system as shown by cm above.

not a meterologist, but have been reading and listening to others over the past years

there is usually a high in the atlantic, named the bermuda high. what it does, is block hurricanes from moving north of it - think of highs as forming barriers to the movement of hurricanes.

depending on how far west the western edge, hurricanes form off the coast of africa, move accross the atlantic, and start bumping along the bermuda high.

if the high isn't very strong, the western edge is in the atlantic, and hurricanes tend to do east coast hits, or hook around the high and miss everthing.
if the high is further west, it will tend to enter the gulf, and what it does after that depend on steering winds, weather fronts, etc.

here is a nasa post on the bermuda high - the video seems to not play, but the picture is correct
https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/10069

since the western extent of the bermuda high changes, it's still kind of far out to tell were the boundary of it is.

there is something else that might be of interest, and are called hebert boxes. there is increased likelyhood of a florida hit, if a strong hurricane passes through these areas

Leave us hope this bitch turns north into the mid-atlantic. Bitch is already down to 1002mb. I'd hazard a guess that it'll be a hurricane by morning.

Why can't we just drop a nuke in the middle of it and blow the storm apart?

One nuke is a hell of a lot cheaper than rebuilding Houston.

Fuck

Even if it turned and hit the east coast it would cause a huge mess as well
A whole lot of the population would be fucked and some major industry would stop or be slowed down.

it's going to be 5 days before it's known for certain, but right now, it looks like the high in the atlantic, is going to weaken and allow the system to curve northward. watch what happens after it passes 60w.

the 2 possiblities that occur are a carolina hit, or it's going to cur around and go back east.

can't really tell untill we get closer

A hurricane has more energy than dozens of nukes. I doubt cooking one off in the middle of one is going to do much. Still, could be interesting to model that.

Meh, we do cruises out of New England to the Carribean in the fall, usually October. You get a much better price.

The last 2 years we have ended up diverted away from Bermuda because of storms but we were not super worried about it, focused on having fun.

Cruises are probably the best way to vacation during hurricane season.

October is normally a safe bet for the Gulf and Caribbean.  I have seen some October hurricanes in the Gulf, but they're not common.

Bad for some islands...yes.
USA?   Maybe not

If you need plywood to board up windows you may want to get it before prices rise because of Harvey.

I still say it may head north and not significantly  impact the USA.  Give it 5-7 days.
