View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: I looked at google maps of the island. This isnt the big volcano. This one is southeast of the monster thats not doing anything. That monster is actually a caldera. It collapsed into its own magma chamber during a past event prior to the eruption focus shifting to Cumbre Vieja. Considered to be extinct at present. Ah ok. Once I posted I started thinking that they'd have to be connected being so close, but that makes sense. |

Watched for a couple hours last night starting with the initial lefts side breakout..
Whole lot of activity! |

I enjoy a good volcanic thunderstorm.
I don't remember the volcano but it was snowing as well, Finland perhaps? They have a lot of geothermal activity. |

One of its IGME scientists, Inés Galindo, details some of them: "The lava is very similar to that of other historical eruptions on the island, such as that of San Juan." Due to its composition, half of it is volcanic glass, but in the analyzed samples there are also crystals of pyroxene, amphibole, olivine, iron oxides or titanium. And in the matrix, microcrystals of other minerals called plagioclase stand out. "It is a glassy mass with many crystals," he sums up. The composition of the lava also helps explain the type of eruption. "It allows us to determine that it comes from the mantle, not like the lavas of Teide or Pinatubo, which had a magmatic chamber where the magma interacts for thousands of years underneath," explains the IGME scientist. In the case of the La Palma volcano, the molten rock has emerged in a very short space of time, preventing its interaction with the rocks of the earth's crust on which the island rests, which would have generated large amounts of gases. "Being a low-evolved baseite, they have less gases, and their eruptions are less explosive," he details. Everything indicates that the magma rose a few years ago, hence the increase in seismic tremors since 2017, until it built up enough pressure to break the island. The origin from the upper part of the mantle, the intermediate layer between the core and the Earth's crust, is confirmed by another independent report. View Quote The image, taken with a petrographic microscope, shows the composition of the lava that devoured the Todoque church. Overimpressed are the most abundant minerals: plagioclase, clinopyroxene, and amphibole. I was amazed last night how thick/tall that new wall of lava was coming down to destroy more stuff. It was a good 30 feet tall. I always picture it flowing more like a stream of water in a flash flood but this stuff was a tidal wave of lava.

A handful of earthquakes 10km and under within the last 24 hours hours. Some were only 6km deep. Scrolling back 3 days and I saw maybe 1 or 2 other earthquakes around 9km.
Also 4.0 mbLg earthquakes are happening more frequently too. |
