FTFY

The junkies I've run into over the years have had the most drama-filled, problem-ridden lives of anyone I've met. The more their life sucks, the more they need to get high to forget about the problems they've brought on, instead of dealing with them. They then generally proceed to destroy the lives of those around them in order to maintain their view through rose-colored opiate glasses.

^^^ This

Most just assume a story about a person in their head when everybody's different. My brother in law was an addict. He was diagnosed with an auto immune disorder with his digestive system, docs kept telling them they didn't know how to treat it, kept prescribing him pain pills for the pain. After awhile the prescrips ran out, turned to heroin and snorted it once since he was told it was so close to being the same thing as a pain pill. One thing led to another and was a full blown addict, stealing from family,  OD'd 3 times, almost died. Failed rehab once, the 2nd time he went voluntarily, got clean. Had trouble with alcohol after rehab the 2nd time, finally clean of alcohol and drugs and picking up the pieces of destroying relationships, ect. While it's his own fault, you can't help but feel for him. A lot of people want to get help/clean, but like others have said, the avoidance of withdrawal is a huge motivator in not getting clean.

If that's true, then terrorism is a climate issue because they do it to get to paradise because their reality sucks. No, they wouldn't be terrorists if they had jobs. LOL GTFO with that liberal bullshit, and I don't want to hear about the people that plant IEDs for $200 because they're penniless and someone told them that they'd get paid $200 if they planted the IED.

You don't do heroin for the "fun" of it.

You do heroin because you are already addicted to opioids and there is no alternative to get them.

Telling a junky to stop doing it is like telling you and me to stop taking shits for a month.  Their bodies won't let them.

You don't get into destructive, hard drugs because you're trying to numb the realities of life, unless you're SERIOUSLY scrambled.

This is the blooming of a flower that was sewn in chaos and neglect.

Beer & weed numb the suck of life. Heroin & meth takes your pain away.

People who go down that road are already self-destructive. About 95% of the people I ever counseled that got into needles and spoons had some serious family issues, and came from pure fucked up childhoods.

Not many come back from hard stuff, at least not until they go full bottom and end up in jail or so screwed up physically they have nowhere else to go. I had a few respond to treatment...but in full confessional I didn't deal with the hard cases as much and it was a number of years ago before heroin really ravaged my county. Most of my stories involve booze, but the other counselors the addiction professionals in the clinic talked alot about those.

Methodone is management, not a cure....it tends to have better results than detox, but it's just a tool. Ultimately it's all subjective and depends more on the psychology and stage the addict is at, and any underlying mental issues they're going through.

I still keep in contact with some people I worked through treatment with, one is a girl who was so down the rabbit hole I was pretty sure she was gone. She lost her kids, jobs, was down to B&E and selling to keep herself going. Got busted over and over, family cut her off...but she willed herself into better situations and she put herself together again. She goes to my brother's church now where he's a deacon and I hear about her a lot. She's doing really well, all things considered. She's trying to reconcile with her family but she sees her kids and has made some big progress with them. But, for every one like here there are 5x as many that just don't get better.

Do you ever wonder if other nations are making this happen with the intent to cause America's decay?

All those logistics involved getting the powerful narcotics here make sense if you consider the possibility of a minor-player State lending support. Especially one who is ideologically opposed to our basic beliefs as a nation.

I have no idea.  The last facility I worked at it heroin was a big problem.  We'd find stamped bags in the parking lot, in the break rooms, in the bathrooms.  We'd give it to the cops and that's about it.  Union didn't want cameras and the old timers just said fire all the youngins that are doing it and we'll pretend like there's nothing to grieve.  Had to escort out more than one kid who was high as hell and take them for drug testing.

The thing was the place I worked at paid well, had decent insurance, and offered a lot in the grand scheme of things in that area but these kids (OK, mostly early 20 somethings) were doing it like it was candy.  Some told me about old sports injuries from high school football that plagued them and others simply said it was what their friends were doing.  None of them had super high aspirations in life hence why they were working where they were (which again, wasn't horrible but you didn't need to have a college degree to do it so it must be bad right?).  Mental issues more than anything else were probably the root cause.  One kid came in one day and dumped syringes on my desk saying I needed to get that stuff away from him.  He went to rehab after he stole money with his father one of the local cops and then OD'd.

That blows my contention out of the water. I was sure that the rise in drug abuse is the result of factories/mining leaving the rural middle of the country.

Maybe it's always been like this but alcohol won't kill you like H...

I see your point but how many addicts get clean and stay that way?  Out the few I know they all but one relapse and lie about it.  Some people will always be addicts and you can't help them.  I can certainly see how anyone that has been around addicts can become jaded and stop giving a damn.  A good friend of mine from way back always calls and needs help (aka money).  I'll give him a ride to his family's or to his job and buy him something to eat provided I have time but that's as far as my support extends.  I don't want him around me or my family and I'm not naive enough to think he'll ever change his ways.

Exactly.

Federal (DEA) and state level regulations which have tightened the controls on opioid class pain killers in recent years - controls which were designed to stem abuse and curb the black market - have been very successful, and, unfortunately, they have had the side effect of creating a booming market for heroin.

Hence the spreading epidemic you are seeing now.

Ohio, overall, has an enormous problem with pain medication addiction BTW.
