I regularly wear about 6-7 different types of hats

(ETA: one at a time, funny guy)

(no, I don't own a fedora)

One of the more noted human responses of highly intelligent people is to avoid eye contact - you have to EARN it with a proven relationship that has no backstabbing or constant aggression to establish dominance. Why? Because that is how they test YOU to see if you are smart enough to recognize it, and respond in kind, parsing the meaning of the spoken word. Not posturing, chest thumping, and blading at 45 to establish rank.

Yeah. I am hiring construction managers not deeb software engineers that dont have to deal with people everyday. I am interview for guys that can take charge and lead- not people that shy away from confrontation and something so simple and important as eye contact.

Lack of eye contact is a sign of  highly intellegent people? I call bullshit.

This.
Its called proffessional attire.

I dont give a shit about what people wear- unless they are representing me and the company I built.  In the business world, everyone will be judged not only on performance but thier appearance. What they wear, what kinds of tools they have, how well groomed they are, the shoes they wear, what kind of car they drive- how well maintained that vechicle is.

Do you want to pay hundred of thousands of dollars, sometimes millions of dollars to build a building to a guy that looks like he just walked off a 1800’s golf course or to a proffessional that doesnt want to be noticed for his “flair” than his performance?

It does matter.

I have a Kangol wool flat cap I stuff in my bag when I go to work (I work nights) when it will be cold in the morning when I leave. Keeps my noggin nice and warm when it's chilly.

I've got a couple of the Kangol Ventair caps that are pretty nice in warmer weather, but I still don't wear them all that much. Thinning hair and wanting to prevent burning my noggin in the sun lead to wanting a good cap. I have some ballcaps... shit, in fact I have too many.

Yes. It does.

You want your construction guys wearing air jordans?

You want a guy representing your company to roll into a jobsite with a porshe?

You want a guy that is in charge of a 15 million dollar project to roll up in a beat up chevy with taco bell wrappers all over it?

We interact with clients that decide who to spend money with and who to is going to build them their shit.  Its not grannys kitchen remodel.

You want a Beta o rouke looking dude with a flat cap and a 911 rolling up?

Anyone can BS a resume and qualifications.

Sorry to hurt your feels and individualism.

I want proffesionals representing me.

Of course I am judging job applicants.

How you dress and behave during an interview is an indicator on how serious they are, how they are organised and prepared and their judgement.

All of which is important.

I dont give a shit if they are gay, muslim, or not. Keep that shit out of the workplace.

I'm nice enough to wear jeans and boots ('cause you know...Texas?). Today I stepped way out of character, and wore a shirt with a collar.

There are no flat brimmers in IT, unless you're talking about some doofus working on a helpdesk or something. Those guys are white collar janitors, and don't count.

When you show up for an interview you should have the common sense to both dress and act a certain way.

Dress appropriately
Remove your hat
Don't sit down until the interviewer sits down
Don't lean back in the chair as if you're lounging around
Research the company you're applying for so it shows you actually giver a fuck about the company and job you're applying for.
Don't swear.

If you need any further help with how to act in an interview, I'll be more than happy to help.

A Flat Cap is extremely useful in that it will fold flat and you can drop it into a top coat pocket to have with you in the event of cold, mist, and rain.  In the event you have to go inside, you can put it back in the pocket.  Since there are no hat checks in restaurants, etc., anymore, the Flat Cap solves the problem of where to put your hat when indoors.
