We live on a rural road with the unfortunate designation of 69th St. It seems like we are doomed to not have a street sign. Every single one has been stolen. We have tried variations of the sign in "Sixty Ninth Street" and "Six Nine Street" and they still get taken.

The road is private so there is no assistance from the county on this. Every sign has come out of residents' pockets. The last one I thought would be good go to. I mounted the sign with a wide bracket and used two carriage bolts to secure the bracket to the post. I had planned to put up a trail cam pointed at the sign, barring permission of the people on the next road up who owned the adjoining property, but thought I had a few days to take care of it. Nope, within a week the sign had been stolen again. Someone used a crow bar to snap the mounting ears off of the bracket to take the sign.

Currently the sign post is a PT 4x4 but at one point it was a steel post. Some tweaker came along in the middle of the night with a portable sawzall and cut off the top of the post just below the sign mount. Then shortly after a logging truck clearing a new property down the road took the entire post out. It didn't seem like having a steel post was a guarantee so I didn't bother putting another one in.

Aside from having a trail cam, we're out of ideas. One of our neighbors who is an EE even floated the idea of building a hidden solar powered battery box with an electric fence controller to electrify the sign. Sounds great, but probably would end up in some dumb teenager's parents suing us.

Yeah this is what the state does to every mile 69 marker, for the same reasons. 68.9

My assumption is they will just cut the pole at whatever level they can reach and take the sign off

Whoever keeps taking the sign isn't some high school kid. They have tools with them. I'm guessing some late 20s tweaker whose sense of humor never graduated high school.

booby trap it.

or stop putting up signs. change the name of the street.

unstealable boulder or concrete block sounds pretty good if it needs a label.

This is probably the best option.  Or get an I beam that’s buried on concrete with 69th on it.

Yes.  They are a thing that will give you a grainy night time black n’ white IR image that will confirm it was indeed stolen.

A big boulder will probably violate what are called “clear zone” rules. Basically there’s a distance from the edge of roadway (varies with design speed) where you can’t / shouldn’t place objects that would be an undue hazard to wayward vehicles.

“But GimpyPaw, I see boulders and trees right next to the road all the time!”

Yes, you do. There can be a lot of reasons for why clear zone standards aren’t being met. Usually it’s because somebody who doesn’t know or care about the standards placed the object there. The city/county/state might not know about it, or haven’t gotten around to addressing it yet.

What’s important is that lawyers know about clear zones. If you go dropping a big rock that ends up wiping out a car that slid off the road, you can bet there’s a lawyer who will chase that ambulance.

But you do you. Life’s all about risks and rewards.

This is the answer. It's a private road so it should be easy. In fact, what kind of pervert named a private road 69th? Was it OP?

Why are opportunities like this wasted on people with no sense of adventure?

Set up sim-card cameras. Maybe even make a website.

Steel post. Filled with concrete. Nested inside another steel post with a pivot point on the bottom to reduce friction. Try to cut outer post and inner post spins. Can’t be cut with a saw.

Cover the outer post in silver anti-seize or similar.

Wire the post to an electric fence transformer.

Mount a building-security OC deploying device on the post to spray vandals (would need a trigger method that’s wind-proof)

The possibilities are endless, and entertaining.

Attach an airtag to it....

That what Whistlin Diesel did to his wonderful, rural "neighbor" that was robbing him..

The thing is concealing the air tag...but I'm sure you can make it look like a reflective thingy or something

Does anybody even use street signs now?

Amazon uses GPS to the extent that even though every mailbox has a huge street number sign attached for 911 they deliver to wrong house.
I pointed this out to a driver and he said they only do what GPS says.

Get someone to weld "69th St" onto it in a bead.

I think they actually changed the name of the town recently (in Austria, so in the German language it wasn't really a problem)
