Spitfire was the fighter that beat the Luftwaffe over Britain
Mustang was the fighter that beat the Luftwaffe over Germany The Mustang is a better all around aircraft - especially when Range & weapons payload is factored. But the Spitfire is a sexy bitch non the less. Only good thing about the suck-o Movie Dunkirk was the Trio of Spitfires (Portis Patrol) flying in over the English Channel... Spitfire was the right airplane for Britain.
Mustang was the right airplane for US. Correct answer: Get both!  ETA: Here's my contribution: Remember, the Spitfire was a pure interceptor. The P-51 was a long-range escort fighter. The first time I went to England, I took a ferry from Calais to Dover. As the boat approached Dover, I witnessed Supermarine Spitfires were doing acrobatics above the white cliffs. It was so beautiful.

Apples and oranges. The Spitfire was a superior dog fighter. Especially when you consider the 20 mm Hispano Suiza's. However, the mustang was a much better escort with the laminar wings and the center mounted tank that had to be drained in order to prevent snap rolls. It really was a matter of looking at different applications. The spitfire could not escort bombers to Berlin, like a Mustang could and the Mustang was not the dogfighter that a spitfire was. Especially at lower altitudes.

BTW, this is the opinion of my grandfather, who never got to fly a Spitfire. But flew 50 plus missions over Europe in a Mustang (1 kill) and many after the war with Occupation of Japan force.

The later model Spits with the Griffon engine were fucking monsters.
Don't get me wrong, I love Merlins, but having seen a Spitfire Mk. XVIII on several occasions, it's an impressive aircraft. |

I don’t take anything away from the Mustang but I always admired other planes more. The P-40, F6F Hellcat, even the F4F Wildcat. I guess it has to do with the earlier planes holding on through grit and
tactics (ok maybe less so with the Hellcat, a damn good plane) versus the later planes that finished things off once the tide had been turned. And the P-38 was a fantastic plane that gets overlooked in a lot of these discussions. |

IIRC a British fighter pilot who flew both in combat said something to the effect of "if it's just in a dogfight, I prefer the Spit. But I'd take the Mustang for getting to the fight, fighting, and getting back."
Basically that the Spit was the far better dogfighter, but had no legs. |
