Mr. and Mrs. Merlin....
P-51 being the Mr and the Spitfire being the Mrs.

I love them both, they have always been a tie for me as to which I like the most....... the Spitfire is sleek and sexy......the Mustang is a Brute.....

Yellow Tails in P51s did shoot those things down.

Mostly on takeoff/landing, though, where they were vulnerable. Once in the air and up to speed they were very hard to deal with, especially if the ME262 pilot used good tactics.

IIRC mechanical failures took out more of them than any other cause.

The later model Spits with the Griffon engine were fucking monsters.

Don't get me wrong, I love Merlins, but having seen a Spitfire Mk. XVIII on several occasions, it's an impressive aircraft.

This. They didn’t get much press but a clipped wing Griffon Spit was a bitch.

Sea Fury outclasses them both, and the P40 is sexy as hell.

So does the Bearcat but neither was a factor in the war.

The Supermarine Spiteful was a late model variant of the Spitfire that used a Griffon 2-stage supercharged engine producing 2,375 HP, giving it a top speed of 494 mph.  It also had a newly-designed laminar flow wing that gave it the fastest roll rate of any fighter of its time.

Rate of climb 4,890 ft/min at 2,000 ft.  For comparison, the 1,490 HP Merlin-powered Mustang ROC was 3,500 fpm, with a top speed of 437 mph.

It's time was short, however, as the jet age made it obsolete.

Beautiful plane.

And because I like the smell of jet fuel in the morning.

If one Mustang is good, two must be better.
