I know right, they would just live forever if we didnt' kill them.

I hate gnawing on them while they are still alive, all that kicking and everything.

Game carts help. Due to runaway development the places we hunt aren't far from the road. It's basically subdivision deer. It doesn't do any good to save the small ones, they just get hit by cars.

I just got a crossbow to start using. I don't want to call attention to myself in these areas, and the distances are really too close for a rifle.

That's what I was thinking! Mine are ridden hard and put up wet. Well not literally, I dry and oil them before they are put up. I'm too hard on stuff to have nice things.

That's how we roll in beaufort. It's all that's left.

The good news is that a lot of deer walk through them. The bad part is that although legal, someone is bound to shoot off at the mouth. That's why I'm going to try with a crossbow. Now that I have 2 in the freezer.

I use my bark rivers for butchering.

Rem 700 30-06  I traded a Ruger 77V 25-06 for this several years ago.  The 25-06 was a tackdriver but I just never was satisfied with they way deer dropped from the 25cal plus it was getting heavier each passing year.

Check out the muzzle brake on the 700.  I've never personally seen this on any other 700 or any other bolt action for that matter, and have always wondered if it was factory or aftermarket.  I will say that it is effective at preventing muzzle rise and maybe even a light amount of recoil.

Here's the buck I shot yesterday, opening day of our gun season.

This year I never managed to get any of my other guns out and used this one mostly (with a Glock 20 too).

Cheapish 6.8 PSA with a Vortex Crossfire 2-7 and the world's worst krylon job.  Federal Fusion ammo.  No muzzle device and cheap YHM FFHG.

Little over 250 yards, I think.  Right after I shot him, he's that pile of white and brown.

He kinda twitched around a little bit, bud didn't move much.

Edit:  Google Maps says 209 yards.

friend of mine got one with his g23. The deer walked right underhis stand. He couldn't get his rifle up. The pistol had self defense rounds in it. I have some pics of the shells he dug out. The first shot was a spine shot, He made a second shot to finish him off quick but the first one put him done and was pretty much doing the job.

He wasn't planning on using that gun. Its not the first time hes used a handgun. he used his 357 under similar circumstanes.  That's why I got a crossbow, what we have are basically bow stands

Shot this yote yesterday in a cow pasture on my way to the deer hunting area just south of Lucketts.

240 yard shot with a Tikka T3 .270 WSM.

She was fat too.

Saw a second one right after but there were cows in the background so I didn't feel comfortable taking that shot.

Also got a 140lb spike buck, so it was a good day.

So if it has a rifled barrel, does it count? Due to restrictions in some Virginia counties, my primary deer rifle is currently a Mossberg 500 with a 12 gauge rifled barrel.  Used it earlier today to take my first deer:

Hornady SST slug at 40 yards.  Lung damage was impressive.  He ran about 20 yards before piling up against a downed tree.

No picture handy, but a accu-trigger Savage 110 in .30-06.  Took it out last Saturday and it let me down, badly.  Fail to fire when it was -15 degrees out.  It worked fine the previous weekend at the range to confirm the zero though it was 50 degrees warmer out.  Had a couple of ~50 yard chip shots on some nice muley bucks and *click*.  Dry fire - firing pin not touching the primer.

I'm not yet sure what is going on with it, but it sure blew that hunt!

Take the bolt apart, it's probably caked in grease which doesn't like the cold.  Clean it and try it again.  You can also adjust the firing pin protrusion.  If it's clicking, the trigger works fine and it's a bolt issue.

Ruger 77/44 all weather model topped with Nikon 3x9x50 Prostaff scope.  Shot taken with WWB 240 grain .44 Rem Magnum JSP at estimated 40-45 yards.  Bullet entered right shoulder, plowed through bottom of heart, and exited out left side of chest.  First time the rifle was ever fired outside of the range.

Same thing happened to me on Monday.  Scared the crap out of an 8 point buck who headed for the next county.  Surprised the hell out of me.  I was able to replicate the problem by pulling the trigger when the bolt wasn't fully closed.  Have to watch that from now on.  My rifle is a Ruger 77/44.
