What is the proper way of using stick butter?

Cut a slice off of the end or scrape the top of the stick length wise?

Also, if you normally cut slices off the ends, but whilst eating at someone else's home, you notice they scrape the top.

Is it proper etiquette to follow their lead and scrape?

I usually cut slices off the end, but if I got to someone else's home then I usually pick the stick up with my fingers, and rub it on my rolls like a kindergartner with a crayon.

You gotta let them know what the score is. It might be your house, but I'm here, this is MY table.

Here is the proper way to use butter.....

I like simple pleasures, like, butter in my ass, lollipops in my mouth.

I fully support this line of thinking.

Slices is the only sane answer. If you change the cross section how can you measure anymore?

I was eating corn on the cob at a relatives house. They just passed the stick of butter around that was on a small plate, and we took turns rolling the corn on top of the stick.

This. If I scraped the top I'd have to think harder about how much I'm using when I'm cooking.

Scraping leads to a butter bridge.

What the hell am I going to do with a butter bridge?

Maybe if I had a butter river and butter mountains I could use a butter bridge.

I don’t.

So, I cut butter from the end.  One end, not both ends.  Just one.

Or, to avoid any confusion causing undo embarrassment and possibly a butter revolution among guests, I use a butter slicer.

For the record, this is a stock image.  Those are not my finger nails. Mine are turquoise and glitter this week.

At the table, a large slice of butter goes on your bread plate to use as required.

I cut off the end for everything except corn on the cob - in which case I roll the whole cob on the butter-stick, length-wise, for maximum coverage!

This is the way.

Now and then I'll add an extra cold Clint squint halfway through, as the butter oozes out from under the roll on the satin tablecloth.

I try to keep a half stick on a covered butter dish in the cupboard for spreading on things and typically cut off the end, but if I need to spread it on fresh bread and the butter is cold then I scrap from the top so as not to destroy the bread trying to spread a cold chunk of butter on it.

As for being able to measure for cooking, I don't use the butter from the butter dish for cooking. The stick of butter for cooking is in the fridge.

Take out your pistol, fire several rounds in to the floor, and then press the side of the hot gun slide against the top of the butter stick, melting it.  Then wipe the butter off the gun with your bread or roll.

Skip the stick?

Just kidding, slices off the end, or just save the hassle of asking many times and just cut off half of it onto your bread/dinner plate.

From now thru April our sticks stay so hard in the cupboard and countertop scraping or softening in the microwave is the only way to butter bread.

Butter is left out at our house.  It's always soft and spreads easily.  No need to slice or scrape.  Why make things difficult?

Nope, I’ve never seen butter go bad sitting out. It happens but is very rare. Bacon grease is the same.

Not that I have ever seen but butter in the fridge for cooking butter in the dish on the counter top for bread and such

And if it did get moldy it’s butter not good throw it and get another stick
