I'm not necessarily opposed to that. I think people that say colonialism is bad wrongly assume all cultures are good/equal. Just look at the state of every non-Western/Commonwealth former British colony today. There's a pretty good case to be made most all of them are worse off after the British withdrew. We and the rest of the Commonwealth nations didn't have that issue because we all shared a common culture. Now to clarify, I'm not advocating invading every nation that doesn't fall in line with us but, where it makes strategic sense, a lasting presence wouldn't be a bad thing. I've said it before but, we invaded and beat Iraq then gave it all up. Rather than sitting and relying on unreliable alliances in Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE to base our regional assets, Iraq should have been turned into our client state from which to project power in the region. It had a number of excellent attributes namely ports, a somewhat developed infrastructure, a number of suitable existing military bases/airfields, and oil. |

What's kind of ironic is that the Soviet military was always regarded as highly rigid, inflexible, and slow to react for having an officer corps incapable of independent action and thought since they were all afraid of ending up in a gulag for having acted contrary to "the interests of the state" or embarrassing the state somehow. On the other hand the US military had an officer corps regarded as more capable of independent thought, problem solving, and boldness so was capable of being faster to react and adjust to conditions.  |
