[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Restaurants and Screaming Children (Page 4 of 8)

OP, have you told us what type of place this was?
Was it along the lines of a Golden Corral? A Chinese buffet? A local hotel restaurant buffet? A middle class country club buffet? A mid-range restaurant offering a special buffet? A higher end restaurant offering a special buffet? A high end country club buffet? The Ritz-Carlton Mother's Day buffet brunch? The dining room at the Lake Placid Lodge or something along those lines? The answer to this question lets us gauge the appropriateness of your butthurt. |

Quoted:I was really just replying to a person not paying their bill no matter what the $ amount.
I have called the Police on a $4 bill , where someone came in ordered and walked out with their food without paying. Where do you live that the police would even show up for that? Serious question. |

Quoted: If it means that much to the restaurant, they can have a contract I sign up front stating the terms and conditions of their restaurant eating experience. If I don't like the terms, I won't eat there. If I like the terms I will. And if I agreed to them, I would be obliged to adhere. I don't recall agreeing to anything up front, however. Quoted: Quoted: I'm really curious how you reconcile your "if it ain't nailed down" view of commerce with your self-proclaimed libertarianism. If it means that much to the restaurant, they can have a contract I sign up front stating the terms and conditions of their restaurant eating experience. If I don't like the terms, I won't eat there. If I like the terms I will. And if I agreed to them, I would be obliged to adhere. I don't recall agreeing to anything up front, however. People who can't be trusted to do the right thing in the absence of civil and criminal repercussions are one of the reasons government is bigger than it needs to be.

Quoted: Oh nose! Your dining experience was less satisfactory due to another patron crying! It must be the restaurant's fault and the server's fault and obviously the parent's fault because a different sentient person was making noise! What shall we do!! Let's STEAL from the restaurant! Let's ROB the server! Let's DEMAND and apology from the parents! It most certainly is the restaurant's fault. Part of their job is to provide a decent atmosphere in which to eat. If they can't do that, then they haven't earned their money. It is also most certainly the parents' fault as well. Normal, polite people would remove their screaming child from a restaurant rahter then subjecting the other patrons to it. Letting a child scream in restaurant is an almost perfect inidcator of having zero class. It is NOT the server's fault. They cannot control the situation. They still deserve to be tipped.

Once you have kids, you tune that shit out. So everyone without kids should suffer, everywhere they go, because people with kids have learned to "tune it out"? That's BS. Yeah, it's bullshit, we should have a society completely without children! You're a kid hater, we get it. There are lots of you out there, and you're easy to recognize. Dad was probably pinching the baby just to get a rise out of you. Maybe you had some bad BO and he was doing it to get you to move further away. Or maybe they were ignoring the kid because, long term, it's the proper response when a kid pitches a fit. You don't know the reason, and you don't care, because you're a kid hater. Hope the soon-to-be-inlaws don't want grandchildren. |

Quoted: Oh for god's sake, you're the one getting worked up here. I wouldn't sit there and eat a full meal for free and try to run out on it. I'm talking about leaving when the only thing on the table is two freaking sodas. Don't get your panties up in a wad about it. ![]() Quoted: Quoted: Oh nose! Either you paid , or I pressed charges. Now it may be where I live , but the Police were always happy to get involved. Good luck figuring out who I am as I'm walking out the door. You'd call the police on someone leaving 2 untouched sodas on the table? Wow. Probably a assistant manger at B-King or Chunky Cheese. LOL |

Letting your kid scream for 1.5 hours and annoy the fuck out of everyone else in my mind is a worse crime than a restaurant losing the $.30 cents over two poured sodas. That's my two sense. Would I use this as an opportunity to eat a giant ass free meal? No. Would I have bounced after a couple minutes if by myself? Yes. |

...So what does GD do under these circumstances? I avoid going to places where anyone under 21 is allowed to be. This is how I started doing it. The last few times we went to a restaurant it has been kids screaming. If we go out now we eat at a bar that does 50/50 food alcohol sales. |

No one pays up front. This isn't Golden Corral. Kind of funny you're not willing to say what the place is but you're vehemently saying that it's not Golden Corral. Don't want to get sued for libel. It's much more costly than 2 sodas. |
| Another one that bugs me more is just a loud table of cackling people in general. They can be teens on up through usually mid forties. I don't expect people to be library quiet at all but damn some times people just talk, whoop and holler at the tops of their voices and you can hear the same voices over everything else. That one seems to happen more than anything else and you get a few tables of them going and the place is down right loud. Same thing though, not much you can do about it really. Try and not go out at peak times, check the place out a bit before seating. Maybe avoid places like Applebee's and such, they seem to attract the after work crowd with the bar / eatery type thing. I've eaten in regular bars that were quieter than those joints. |

I'm in NY , the police respond very quickly to the local business's, and they are close by. Now your situation is different you didn't state untouched before , in the situation you described you talked to a manager and complained I wouldn't expect you to pay for the 2 soda's untouched or not. I would have handled the entire situation different as a Manager. I also have 2 young kids who do cry sometimes in a Restaurant and my Wife or I will walk outside with them until they calm down. |

It is NOT the server's fault. They cannot control the situation. They still deserve to be tipped. You and I don't agree often but we agree on this. At the bare minimum, buffet restaurant servers buss tables. They may also fill your drink. Their job is not to handle screaming children. Pretty sure also on a holiday like Mother's Day, they're wanting to make sure they do their jobs expeditiously so people can enter, get tables, eat, and get on with their day. |

I was at a Bob Evans (yep, poor people place and I deserved the abuse). First a family with two kids came in. The kids started kicking my booth. Then the two of them started chasing each other around the restaurant. My wife told me not to say a fucking thing. So I was quiet.
Then this fat fuck walks in and sits down. Pulls his fucking phone out and puts it on speaker full fucking blast and reviews his 10 voice mails he got. I then pull my fucking phone out to blast "fuck the police" from NWA and my wife stops me. I went to Bob Evans, I deserved what happened. |

So what does GD do under these circumstances? I'm for a middle option.... I'd move if it bothered me that much, but I wouldn't ask the server to talk to them for me. It's a personal issue with another customer, not a company issue. And if I'm not going to talk to the family myself I don't expect someone else to do it for me. I've seen too many retail complaint stories where customers are offended because the employee didn't step in to be the police - either with a loud table, or to shut the other party up if there was an argument. I've seen too many retail complaint stories where customers are offended because they employee DID step in to ask a customer to keep the noise down or control their children. In both cases the common theme is that the employee became the scapegoat for issues customers had with other customers. This is why I don't expect them to do my dirty work for me if I am annoyed by another customer. |

Unless I'm on his ignore list which is reasonably likely.
The last proper buffet I've been to was an Easter brunch at the Regency Room at the Williamsburg Inn a few years ago. Plenty of children and not a single one caused any disruption. Now, I don't dine like that too frequently and I do have a thing for Old Country Buffet's fried chicken, but when I lay with dogs, I expect to get fleas. So I don't bitch about other diners ruining my experience when I go to a place like Old Country. |

Been there, done that....I have a 2 1/2 yr old and never tolerate that with our kid; only once have we had to 'go to the car' to calm them down. I'm blessed as my kid is very well behaved but others are not.
I've said something to the familes AND server/manager the few times this has been an issue out with other munchkins. |

Quoted: Whoever has the best lawyer wins. That's the way the world works. Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Quoted:So theft is fine with you if you are ok with the dollar amount. The joint ain't gonna go broke over 2 sodas. Like I said, free to call the police. They even gonna show up over 2 sodas on mother's day? Doubt it. Or hire a lawyer. Gonna cost you more than 2 sodas. So you define theft as whatever you can't get away with? Whoever has the best lawyer wins. That's the way the world works. |

My statement of "didn't want to make a bad impression on inlaws" is related to not wanting to have to find a different place to eat when we already had reservations and were hungry. They wanted to go there for awhile and had bene looking forward to it. For the record: I wouldn't have run out on a tab after actually bringing back any food to the table. It would have been after the first couple minutes of waiting for our sodas and hoping the kid would calm down. Rather than leave, we moved tables. Could still hear screaming the entire time, but at least my ears weren't ringing at the new table. |

Not my place to call out other customer's in their place of business. I don't make the rules there. I complain to the owner or manager. If I'm not happy, I leave. That's how it works. I'm not getting into a potential physical altercation over your special snowflake. It's solely the business's responsibility to address rude customers. |
