There was a time...long ago...when free men took up arms in defense of their country.

In B4 all the tough guys who never served one second in the military start parroting “slot a floppy” and other chest thumping sentences.

Is there anywhere to read up on the overall history of Rhodesia and what happened there? I'm currently reading the book Fireforce by Chris Cocks and it's been a great read so far.

I’m a huge fan of the conflict. Fire force was an outstanding concept and they executed it flawlessly. They would conduct combat jumps multiple times IN ONE DAY! Unreal. They also killed a ton of tangos. The problem was a math problems. Sanctions plus huge tango armies arriving from multiple adjacent states versus a small army. They didn’t have the numbers to win.

Books:
Fire force The Rhodesian Civil war The Rhodesian war fifty years on 3 sips of Gin |

Operation Eland is a fascinating operation as is the assault on the tango bases in/ near Chimoio ( operation Dingo).

Another recent book about the conflict was "spider zero seven" by Mike Borlace. A helicopter pilot that worked Fireforce. An outstanding read.

What kept you from serving? Fear? Physical or mental incapacity? Or did mommy say no? I’m sure you’re quite the tier 1 commando / office gun guy in real life. |

I hate our history revisionists in the media, anyone who talks of Rhodesia is considered extremist. The awesome part of that documentary was that it should the whites and blacks fighting together against commies. So many great people starved after the Commies took over. So sad. Wish the good guys won, but we can't win them all.
I sometimes wonder what the Alphabet boys who read these messages think? Do we ever flip them? |

I never get tired of posting this story. Mom grew up in Zambia formerly Northern Rhodesia from pre independence till 1979.
There was a ZANLA (Joshua Nkomo's group) training camp a quarter mile or so from where they lived. The understanding between the locals and the rebels was.....Don't get too close. One day mom and a childhood friend of hers were riding bikes and got a little too close and were waved off by a rather unhappy rebel guard with a Kalashnikov. |

One of these days I'll build my rhodi fal, my gear logo recievers been sitting since 2005, the imbel kits just sitting there. Some rhodi paint is still on the stock, and several mags are fully painted.

View Quote | Read Chris Cox Fireforce, the multi national force of volunteers from around the globe (alot of US vietnam vets) and locals from SR seemed about the opposite of racist. Great book for anybody who wants to read on the conflict. |

"Sit Nomine Digna"
( May It Be Worthy of the Name ) The Republic of Rhodesia certainly was, regardless of what most "journalists" and political commentators will say about it. With all her citizens in mind, both black and white, they fought the scourge of communistic terrorism in a vicious Bush War. They did this while keeping age old tribal feuds at bay, maintaining the highest standard of living, and the strongest economy in Africa. They built railways, roads, cities and civilization in a region of Africa that had been desolate since the collapse of the Great Zimbabwe in the 15th century. They did this all, in less than 100 years. The claim that this story is about "white supremacy", is historically illiterate at best, and viciously racist at worst. The Rhodesian Army fought a highly motivated enemy, armed by Communist China and the Soviet Union respectively. They did so on a shoestring budget, fighting admirably under exceptionally difficult circumstances. To this day, the vertical envelopment tactics of the Rhodesian "Fireforce” is studied at the highest levels of academic military institutions. As are the successes and failures of their counter-insurgency and intelligence operations. The story of the Rhodesian Army is one that should be studied and memorialized, recognizing the sacrifices of those who fought so valiantly during that tumultuous time in history… The events surrounding the Rhodesian Bush War (as well as the earlier Boer War) are becoming more & more relevant to current events taking place throughout most of the western world. Rhodesia "was" The Bread Basket of Africa until...
I read a fantastic book titled "Don't Lets Go To The Dogs Tonight". An autobiography of a young girl as her family leaves England to become farmers in Rhodesia and through the war. It is fascinating to see what it was like on the "home front" durning the war, how they survived and what they had to do to do so. About the Author Alexandra Fuller was born in England in 1969. In 1972 she moved with her family to a farm in Rhodesia. After that country’s civil war in 1981, the Fullers moved first to Malawi, then to Zambia. Fuller received a B.A. from Acadia University in Nova Scotia, Canada. In 1994, she moved to Wyoming, where she still lives. Fuller is the author of several memoirs, including Travel Light, Move Fast, Leaving Before the Rains Come, and Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness. |

Read quite a few books on the subject. Those Selous Scouts and Rhodesian SAS were something else. Too bad about the country going to Mugabe and the following results.

I am a big fan of the Rhodesian Constitution and voting system.
A Roll and B Roll. To get on A Roll, you had to have some skin in the game. B Roll was for those who didn't meet income or other requirements. It wasn't racial there were whites on B roll who didn't work. One man one vote is a failed system. We are living proof of this right now. Rhodesia also had more black millionaires then the US did at the time. What was also pretty cool was how Rhodesia didn't force black Africans who wanted a traditional tribal life to live in European civilization. The Tribal System was left intact with the chiefs consulting with the Rhodesian government - a true republic. |

Anyone know the story about two pilots flying WW2 Avengers over there?
Maybe Courseairs? |
