Don't wear coats, gloves, long sleeves, loose shirts, etc. around unguarded rotating machinery. And don't reach over/under/around unguarded rotating machinery till you've turned it off and locked it out properly.
Rules. There is usually a good reason for them. |

 The first thing I envisioned after watching this was an engineer walking into my office and asking if it was going to impact the delivery of his parts.

Wow, worse than I expected...
I guess you could say he went to pieces over that accident... Obviously, closed casket or small box funeral. I wonder if his family knows how bad it was. Thats Horrible. |

I actually knew someone who was killed by a lathe accident.
However, it wasn't what you might think. He was electrocuted. Apparently there was some kind of defect in the power control unit. |

When I was a medic I got a call once to one of the local canneries for a man caught in a machine. On arrival we found the guy I had gotten the sleeve of his rain jacket caught on the turnbuckle on the shaft of an ice machine. He was literally wrapped around an axle. I had to cut him out of there layer by layer. Traumatic asphyxia is not a pretty thing.

I run a boring mill with a 25HP spindle motor. It’s scary enough.

I have worked on engine lathes for about 15 years now (started in my teens) and have extreme respect for them.
The way he leaned over the spinning chuck with loose clothes on like that makes it look like he was drunk or something. Anyone who works on a lathe knows not to do half the things he was doing and wearing around a lathe. That was a brutal one though. Don't get complacent around machinery! I recall another video of a guy on a hi-lo jumping off to save his load from falling and he gets trapped under the hi-lo. What's left of him is dragged around in a circle as a smear for several minutes before someone notices.  Failed To Load Title |
