For those who have read Scott's older stuff, this shouldn't be all that surprising. His story about leaving corporate America suggests a lot of resentment over being too white and male for the job.
He usually laughs it off because it was the window that opened after that door closed that made him a very wealthy man. But, the resentment is obvious. |

Things were very lot more blatant in that era. I'll never forget hearing about how the Illinois State police recruited, circa 1997. Some governor's committee in Springfield established how many were to be hired of a given list of demographic criteria. In the selection process, you were only competing against others of your category. So, if you were a white male who could not max their physical fitness exam, written test, and had a college degree, you wouldn't even get a callback for an interview, as there were plenty who could. The friend of mine who dealt with that had played football at Illinois State, graduate with honors... couldn't even get an interview. He ended up signing on with a country Sheriff's department (dude really wanted to be Po-Po, what can I say?) and is now planning his retirement in a few years. I heard rumors (never tried to verify) that some recruit classes in the mid 1990s were well less than half "white." I've since interacted with two Illinois State Police officers in my professional life, all who would be the age to have been from that era, neither were "white." So, it does serve as an indicator in support of the rumors. We probably have some members here who can shed some light on this or correct some details. |

I have quite a few black friends. I don't live in a segregated city that breeds racism against white black or brown people. For those of you who think most black people secretly hate you it simply isnt true unless you live in a dominantly black urban area. Same shit as the blatant white racism in most places where there are very few black people and the only exposure to blacks is the crime news they see from urban areas. If I was a black person in white rural Ohio I'd be just as scared as a white person in Baltimore. If you live somewhere that isn't segregated and monocultural by race you should make efforts to bridge this divide imo. It's worth it.
