Saw this on another site, and I think it's cool as hell.  I wouldn't want one in .243, but .308 should work just fine.  Must hide credit card.
If this lovely beast belongs to you: excellent rifle, I'm jealous.

That does look awesome. I've been contemplating taking the barrel on my SPS Tactical down to 16.

I think the rifle I posted the pic of is a 16.5".  I've been looking at a Remington 700 AAC-SD with a 16" barrel in .308.

My buddy decided to hacksaw his .270 barrel down to 17" after looking at a bunch of short barreled bolt action pictures....

Yes, this is what I'm thinking about getting.  Looks great!  I like that the barrel is already threaded for my can.

I just had my Savage Precision Carbine cut down. I wanted it to be a manageable length with my can. I had it cut to 14.5", and had the YHM QD brake pinned on to bring it back to 16.5" overall barrel length. I haven't shot it yet but I do like the way it handles.

I like 20" for .308. It's a nice compromise length: still fairly compact, but having about 200 fps more than 16". But 16" would be really nice for deer hunting with a suppressor.

I think 16" is too short for my needs. 18" would most likely get it done. I like 24" barrels for 1000+ yards.

You don't lose that much. You might lose 100-150 but that can all be made up with superperformance rounds.

I already have a 26" .260 Remington, which is freakishly long with the can screwed on the end.

There is something appealing about going really short when I already have one that's really long.

I like a short gun for shooting out of vehicles or for ease of dismounting vehicles. All those shots are usually within range of a 5.56 round though. I am not knocking the short guns at all, they look awesome. Powder is expensive and I would prefer it burns within the confines of one of my barrels.

I want to take gunsmithing classes pretty much just to learn how to make nice rifles like these.

I need to buy another 91/30 just to cut it down and put an enfield jungle carbine flash hider on it.

I have a Savage. 223 I hacked the barrel down to 16.25 in a fit of bubba. I've been considering getting it cut to 14.5 with a brake but have been too cheap.

It varies a lot based on the load and rifle, but it will normally fall between 100 and 200 fps of loss. Regardless of whether it's 100 or 200, it's still substantial, and for some people, it's not worth giving that up for 4" of barrel length. It really depends on how it's going to be used. I'd be fine with a 16" SCAR, but would prefer 20" in a bolt rifle. YMMV

.308 and offshoots get all their velocity with 20-22 in.  Maybe even less with some powders.

No point at all in having any more barrel than that.

I've wanted to build a custom rifle on a 7.62 Enfield for years. My idea is a slightly reshaped triggerguard(would probably involve cutting a piece out and welding it back together), a 16" barrel and full length stock. Problem is, I can't find an already-Bubbaed rifle to start with and don't want to modify an original.

Very interesting point. My COBB BA 50 has bolt handle on left while maintaining right side ejection. I am really surprised this style of action is not more popular.
I would give love a Savage BA .338 LP with that action.-Art

Yeah, that number is probably closer to 30". However, there's nothing wrong with a short barrel .308 for most applications.

Optics work fine if you don't want a mile of barrel to get a longer sight radius.  Obviously they use slower powders, but that kind of defeats the purpose.
