I have a guy in the office, not really a stolen valor guy but he definitely wears camo outside of the office.

He is sorta autistic when it comes to military and history stuff. So I kinda just think he is a militaria buff and dont think much of it.

However  when on the phone with customers and going over catalog numbers and sales numbers, its all military phonetic alphabet. There are times where I swear he is calling in air support or an artillery attack.

No one else in the office has issues speaking with customers and none of us need to rattle off sierra, foxtrot zulu all day, not sure why he does. I feel like this is confusing to customers, especially those that have no idea whiskey  tango foxtrot he is talking about.

ETA....going to add the civilian vs military phonetic alphabet

They work, particularly for those of us who don't hear that well over telephone.  I taught it to my Wife so she could more effective talk to on cell phones.  Remember how horrible the audio quality was of those old Nokia's?

Don't sweat it.

Because its the correct thing to do?  Its a skill every man should have.  I hate it when people try to say things like: "B, as is Babushka" ,  "C, as is Clarinet", now THAT sounds annoying.  Just about everyone I know uses correct phonetic alphabet code; anything else is just plain ignorant.

Was gonna say this.  When on the phone with part numbers or serial numbers the pronunciation of some letters sound too much alike to distinguish wtf the person on the other end really said.

Nato standard, aviation, boating, law enforcement, fucking useless indian tech support even uses it.

It's pretty much the world standard when communicating in English.

Well, it was created by a civilian aviation organization, so there's that.

If non military folks are not allowed to use the military phonetics, thereby depriving them of their First Amendment rights, then it will only be a matter of time until non military folks are not allowed to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

ICAO or military phonetics are  used in aviation every day. What is the civilian phonetic? The cop version?

ICAO came up with it first - what you call "NATO phonetic alphabet" is really "ICAO phonetic alphabet". (There are some slight differences now, but they are effectively the same, by and large.)

Thank God.

Maybe hes a ham radio guy. I am and I use phonetics all the time on the phone. Jugdar in India rattles off some numbers in what he thinks is English and I don't understand.

Tree
