So I should use words that you are not familiar with to communicate with you?  That doesn't make a Lot of Sense.

Because its the correct thing to do?  Its a skill every man should have.  I hate it when people try to say things like: "B, as is Babushka" ,  "C, as is Clarinet", now THAT sounds annoying.  Just about everyone I know uses correct phonetic alphabet code; anything else is just plain ignorant.

I have a guy in the office, not really a stolen valor guy but he definitely wears camo outside of the office.

He is sorta autistic when it comes to military and history stuff. So I kinda just think he is a militaria buff and dont think much of it.

However  when on the phone with customers and going over catalog numbers and sales numbers, its all military phonetic alphabet. There are times where I swear he is calling in air support or an artillery attack.

No one else in the office has issues speaking with customers and none of us need to rattle off sierra, foxtrot zulu all day, not sure why he does. I feel like this is confusing to customers, especially those that have no idea whiskey  tango foxtrot he is talking about.

Learned it while working at FedEx Express for many years, even had to use the "MILITARY TIME" and "ZULU TIME". Calling in to our airport station for container weights, labels and time of exit were all done in Zulu time and using phonetic alphabet.

What you call a "military thing" is also known at the International Telecommunications Union standard phonetic alphabet. It's a worldwide standard, commonly used in radio communications in aviation, maritime, amateur radio, etc.

What you call the "civilian" phonetic alphabet presumably is the old phonetic alphabet used by some US police agencies.

If he was using the police phonetics instead of the international standard ones, would you be complaining that he was a police wanna-be?

Maybe he should learn the "DX" phonetics, then he can be a radio nerd.

I use it all the time as an amateur radio operator, and on the phone if I have to spell something. Nothing more annoying to me then a rep on the phone spelling things like "A as in anteater, g as in glamorous". Learn the damn NATO alphabet!

OP this is standard in many places, and appropriate for any type of comms.

I do it all the time over the phone, and the people on the other end often appreciate it.

Never served.

In fact, it was taught to my 10th grade geometry class on the first day of school by Friar Ignatius at a Catholic high school in Baltimore.

He also had no prior military experience.

It’s just one of those things a man should know.

As a pilot, I use the military phonetic system.  I have a scanner and it is comical to hear the officers use the civilian or whatever else they can come up with.  Want a good laugh?  Ask a telemarketer or tech support person to spell something.
