It wasn't a "disaster" - NASA didn't want to pony up and keep it in space. They let it fall.
Edited because I'm a goofball. |

I remember Skylab. I would have been 8 or so years old. Some company was selling insurance in case it landed on your house.

I probably don't remember as much about that as I should. Seems I was a bit distracted with my high school
graduation that same month. But...yeah. The space program was something I watched with interest from elementary school on. |

Didn't the nav electronics for that end up in a Russian nuke weapons satellite?

|
Last time a Saturn V was ever used was the unmanned mission to put the Skylab payload into orbit

I always thought it looked cool with the X shaped solar array on top.

I was on a field exercise in Germany when it was scheduled to reenter the Earths atmosphere. I was sure it was going to land on my plastic coated canvas jeep roof and take me out. I think you could buy a hat with a big point on the top of it that was advertised as a "Skylab early warning hat" or some such bullshit.

Somewhere in all my old pictures I have a story from an Charleston Gazette writer talking of Skylab, at the time it was going to be crashing back to earth and they could not tell you where it would land when it would fall from the sky. The story was a paraody of it falling into a fountain on the WV State Capitol grounds.

I remember it well!
I was 15 at the time, I had built more Saturn V models that were positioned around my bedroom than anyone would probably believe. I wanted to be an astronaut in the worst way. |

I followed all the space missions when I was a kid. Remember it well.
Sad days for me when we didn't return to the moon, when the Saturn V went out of use, and even sadder when they couldn't keep Skylab in orbit. (But I'm of the opinion we should stayed on the moon with a lunar base, and expanded orbital operations.) The Apollo-Soyuz mission was in 75 as well. |
|
I remember when it came down. Newspaper sponsored a deal if you guessed where it fell you won something. I didn't get shit.

Have been on the mock up in the Smithsonian.
Big inside. Kinda cool. |

Besides, we have shit exploring other planets and even outside the solar system. The Russians have a cab that goes into earth orbit. It will be nice to see American astronauts riding American rockets again. Sometime. I hope. |

I was in grade school when it came down. IIRC, some guy on TBS named Bill Tush had some sort of Skylab emergency drills.

Who didn't have a "Skylab, it sure ain't bird shit" bumper sticker? I did, no digital cameras then for a picture of it though.
Damn, I'm old! |

Used to order a drink at Eskimo Joes in Stillwater, OK called a SkyLab Fallout

I remember being in elementary school and seeing the umbrella fix, thinking to myself "that shit is totally K-mart".

Way before my time, but we still study the HBS case "Strike in Space".
Crew got on each other's nerves so bad, and they were so micro-managed from the ground, they just shut off the radio for a few hours. |

Quoted: It was damaged on launch. They had a hell of a time keeping it habitable...even using stop-gap engineered fixes. I remember it well...I was grown when it launched. I remember it well...I was grown when it launched. I was in junior high school. Skylab was NASA's attempt to do something cool to keep the public's attention between the moon landings and the space shuttle. Unfortunately, they had to do it on the cheap. The 1970s were not kind to NASA's budget. |

I was in high school when it launched, had more important things on my mind.
Girls, where to buy beer, and that's not even considering the draft! |

I was 9 years old and living in Australia when it 'landed' it was HUGE DEAL at the time. I recall it being all over the news.

The Skylab warning hat had a plastic suction cup dart on the top, it would give you 3 nano seconds warning when Skylab landed on you.
