Back in the 50's and 60's when I was a kid, there were very few courthouse squares in the Midwest that didn't have a tank, cannon, howitzer or fighter jet on the courthouse lawn.

Some of the tanks were open and we used to get inside them and play. Now everything has the hatches welded shut and increasingly they have them roped-off with chains...or removed entirely.

These earned my wife and I a visit from the SP guard at the gate and the stink eye by what looked like the SP boss (in his Police truck).

Some Nosey Nancy ( I wish I had gotten a picture of her,  Black lady with the most hideous fro/Beehive thing ) and her husband in a little car cruised out of the gate and saw my wife,  and turned around at the exit and came back in stopping in front of my wife and taking her picture while she was taking a pic of a static.  Then proceeded to go to the gate and show the picture on her phone to the SP and said this woman is suspicious and she has a camera.
Then on the way out the second time the idiots saw me too.  LOL

SP was cool.  We cracked a few jokes about it.

And the B-25 as seen from the IR sensor on the 101.

What does it take to get a local VFW post anything like this, demilled armor, artillery, anything, probably not any airframe though.

Local court house has some Civil War era coastal artillery cannons flanking the front steps. They load up blank powder charges in them and fire them at the commencement and end of the 4th of July fireworks display. A local park used to have a Patton on static display but it was removed a few years ago. Not exactly sure why but I know it was regularly vandalized by kids so that might have something to do with it.

On a side note why do they paint the canopies gray on so many static displayed aircraft? I always wondered the purpose behind this.

On my bird above the whole thing is painted. The canopy is blue because the glass gets hazed and crazy looking after being in the sun so long. It looks better to paint it because it protects the metal better. Probably cheaper in the long run to paint vs polishing the metal.

When I last visited Anniston, AL, a year ago to get another Garand at the CMP; I noticed the local VFW building was for sale. It had a nice M48 or M60 sitting in the parking lot. I wondered if the tank came with the building, or if the Army would come get it. I passed an M60 on a flat bed heading into Jackson, TN a week ago. They had one at the local ARNG post, but I don't know if this was that one. A local courthouse has a German Maxim in concrete out front. IT was neat.

The process to get a ship is ridiculous! I actually stumbled upon the list of ships that were available, and decided to research the process to obtain one as a museum piece because I had some time to waste. What struck me was the requirement of having a disposal plan for the ship should you not be able to continue to care for it. There didn't seem to be a way to pass it along to someone else better able to care for it, straight to the scrappers.

Back on topic...these photos are not mine but these are what came to mind.

I grew up near Union City, TN and this M7 was out front of the National Guard armory. Today its over at the VFW post.

I was driving through Gallatin, TN last year and out at the airport was this F-4. I know nothing about it other than its an F-4.

Not a small town, and I haven't visited it yet, but this is in Centennial Park in Nashville. I didn't realize it was there, so I plan to at least go check it out. The quote is from the plaque:
“This F86L Sabre Jet was flown by the the Tennessee Air National Guard from 1957 – 1960 in support of the USAF Air Defense Command. After being retired from active service it was given to the City of Nashville. I was renovated and mounted in 1982 by these men of the Nashville Air National Guard Unit.”
