I’m watching the Van Halen documentary below...

and at 17:21 they mention Roth cloned his act from a singer named Jim Dandy who was the frontman of a 70’s band called Black Oak Arkansas. Roth actually went to their show at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go with a home movie camera and asked if he could tape them.

Skip to 2:23 here to see Dandy on stage and judge for yourself.

Black Oak Arkansas - Hey Ya'll - Charlotte Motor Speedway, North Carolina 1974

Dave even copied his look and mannerisms.

It was the 70s.
Probably every dude in the business had long hair, homo-erotic pant suits and shitty voices masked by the feedback and over-amped speakers.
Sure, they both had blonde hair, also, but.....

Jimmy Dandy couldn't sing, so there's that.

In '76 I got their "Raunch 'n' Roll" album on cassette. It was a hot pink cassette and a damn good album.

I always heard that growing up.  Yea the optics works.  The singing doesn't.

But he was certainly influenced and did it well.

Well...if Jim Dandy had teamed up with Eddie and Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony, we might know his name today.

Elvis and Eminen ripped off black music.

It was all about sex, drugs, and rock & roll.

I've seen both of them live, and while Dave may have have patterned his image after Jim Dandy, his take on it was unique.

Both of them were just presenting the over-the-top frontman image that was expected at the time.

It entertained the audience and made the shows more exciting.

Influence? Yes. Rip-off? No. DLR was a talented performer. Can’t rip that off.

Yeah, it honestly is.

It shows that they're well-connected and adaptable. And probably pretty easy to work with, contrary to what a long list like that might suggest.

No surprise there.

Question for extra credit.  Where did Axl Rose pick up his stage moves?  Very few will know this name.

DLR did it better.

Edit;

Denis Leary is a better Bill Hicks, too.

Meh, I don't buy it. He may have influenced DLR but not 1:1 copy.

Lots of lead singers dressed similar in that area and also danced that way. Look at Mick Jagger's stage mannerisms.

Did EVH "copy" Chuck Berry, Jimmy Page or Jimi Hendrix? Where does it end?

The bottom line is that earlier musicians influenced later musicians. Styles and methods of play came from somewhere. DLR and Van Halen just built upon the foundation. Many people believe they were the best at what they did. Count me in that group.

Damnit.  Missed that post.

Well, to further my point, you can watch the video I posted and guess who got Slash's guitar tone sorted out.

Hint; It want Michael Schenker...

What if I told you Axl Rose ripped off his style from the singer of a band called Shark Island.

I thought early Axl and GNR was a blatant rip off of Michael Monroe and Hanoi Rocks.

They even used a line from a Hanoi Rocks song - welcome to the jungle.
