Have a cabin rented in Maggie Valley NC, then driving 1 hour 15 minutes into TN to see it.

Anyone know if wearing a welding helmet or cutting torch goggles safe to view it?

I watched one through a welding helmet. Cutting torch lens won't work.

Every local business I know is trying to rent any refer truck they can find, and expect to pay $10 a bag for ice if you can find any, the traffic will bring re-supply to a halt. If you have a medical condition please stay home, it's going to be like Black Friday at Wal-mart times 100 everywhere!

I think that does it for my plan of driving to warm springs area and heading back home.

I'll find a spot in Vancouver with a clear line of sight and call it good.

I'm in Central Oregon. A friend is a deputy in the middle of it all. He told his wife and 3 kids that they will not leave home that day. He's a pretty level headed guy, and I've never seen him worked up like this. The agencies are all planning for Armageddon and hoping for Y2K.

At the very least, traffic will be a disaster. We were toying with the idea of a 3 day backpacking trip around Mt. Jefferson, but even that sounds like it will be nuts. I think I'll stay home and see 99% and let the yahoos fight for the last package of Top Ramen.

ETA: Before school got out, teachers @ my nephew's school (8th grade) gave them a list to give their parents...what to buy for eclipse week! It looks like a pre-hurricane list, and we are not even in the area of totality.

Originally I was going to go backpacking near 3 finger jack, but decided it would be too crowded

I looked at what it's going to be here, I'll settle for a diamond ring eclipse.
