nothing crazy here in Lakeside, IE east county San Diego. I think we are kinda on the edge of it so far. worst expected to hit around 1ish and it doesnt look like it will be that bad. which is good for me as my roof is fucked. I'm in the process of trying to find a new roof for less than the price of a new car.

I'm having a (so far) minor incursion of Argentine ants.  I think the gardeners upset them yesterday, so they are seeking shelter indoors.  They haven't found the cat food bowl yet.  I'm using some indoor gel (Advion) to keep them busy until the rain ends, after which I can spray Fipronil around the whole house.

Orange County checking in. Only light wind and light rain so far. Planes are still landing at John Wayne (coming in over the ocean which is the opposite direction than they normally do). I have a view of Newport harbor and there are a few boats cruising around. I checked the news and the surfers are out in full force.

Just thinking…, the watershed in San Bernardino and Orange County from Big Bear on down to the Ocean is the Santa Ana River.
No way it can hold the amount of  water.  I wonder what it’s going to look like in the neighborhoods backed up to it in Orange, Santa Ana etc.
thoughts?

Aug 20, 2023 1006 PST, I am in the San Gabriel Valley(20 miles west of L.A.), and it has literally stopped raining, and just sprinkling. So far so good, just regular rain fall. According the NWS the heaviest rainfall is to be  expected at 4pm PST.

Did I not see a "rain map" on one of the multitude of 'weather' channels showing LV area getting a few inches?

Maybe that doesn't translate into water that flows into Mead but I've seen what happens when it rains in LV. Dry as a bone, neck deep in minutes.

LV rain runoff flows into mead, but it isn’t going to create “an incredible rise over the next few weeks”

My area is showing 30-40mph gust expected.   Most of the strong wind is going to come from the mountains and valleys funneling the wind, like the normally do without a storm.

The river won’t flood. The Prado Dam can hold a substantial amount of water. I wouldn’t surf river jetties (the area at the mouth of the river) for a while though. The water will be gross around there for a few days.

Glad somebody said it.

I sure don't want it to be a cat 5. That will bust up a bunch of homes and a bunch of Californians will flee to Red States.

Houston never recovered from the New Orleans refugees for example.

Another consideration is near certain massive influxs of federal funds that they'll be allocated for being such reliable Democrats.

Are they flying all the way from Keesler?

Santa Maria

https://globe.adsbexchange.com/?icao=ae0116

Pretty sure that's from Vandenberg AFB in Lompoc.

well, you would be wrong.

https://www.afrc.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/3497974/hurricane-hunters-depart-to-fly-hilary-reconnaissance/

KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. --

The Air Force Reserve “Hurricane Hunters,” assigned to the 403rd Wing at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi, departed today to fly weather reconnaissance missions into Hurricane Hilary to collect weather data that improves National Hurricane Center forecasts.

The 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, or “Hurricane Hunters,” are scheduled to fly their first mission into the storm today.

Crews along with maintenance personnel are operating out of Santa Maria Public Airport, Santa Maria, California.

Wow, thanks. That's interesting. I really wonder why they wouldn't go to Vandeberg. Seems weird. Although, we always had a firebomber squadrons in Santa Maria & Santa Barbara.

Interesting. Thanks for the info.

Vandenberg isn’t really equipped for airplanes.

Why? Been to plenty of airshow there. We used to call their medivac on occasion down to South County for things. Have they tore up the air strip?

ETA: my knowledge is dated on Vandenberg to the 1980's & 1990's.

I’ve been to air shows there too then. The air strip is there. They don’t have the equipment to deal with aircraft on a regular basis since no planes are actively stationed there.  It’s Space Force.
