So is it time zone or geography?

I feel like when I was in Chicago, which is an hour behind Ohio, it got dark when I would expect it to, and it's further north.

Yet are in different areas on the map when the shadow monster attacks. NC gets eaten first even though Mickey Mouse's hands are pointing at the same characters in both places.

Peru is in your time zone too. I bet it gets dark around 4:30-5 there right now. A little ways above the Arctic Circle in your time zone, the sun doesn't even go down at all. And Antarctica on your same line of longitude will have night all day, er, night, perpetually.

To start with, the sun doesn't magically jump 1/24'th of a distance across the sky each hour. Where you are east to west in the time zone matters.

Where you are north to south also matters as far as how much daylight there is at any particular time of the year.

Mix of Latitude and longitude.

But taking longitude out of the picture....

Sunset here is around 8:23 now ( southern RI, Lat 41.490)

Cleveland OH, about 500 miles west, roughly same latitude (41.4993) and same time zone is a little past 9:00.

I figured the sun would set at the same time in the same time zone.  Sunset at 8:23 in the summer?  That sucks

Time zone changes are gradual. You don't think the sun jumps a whole hour right on the border of the central/eastern, right?

You know that the Earth rotates and places more eastern (in the direction of the rotation) will be blocked from the sun earlier than something 500 miles opposite of that rotation....right.

Time zones work in one hour increments, the rotation of the earth is continuous, not incremental.

Roughly anywhere between the tape lines it is the same time by your watch.

On the incredibly dark black night of June 21, 2010, you are totally alone in a row boat at Latitude 0 degrees North and Longitude 180 degrees West (Equator, international date line). You have no artificial means of telling time (ie. No watch, no phone, no radio, no navigational or nautical instruments). The sea is dead calm. There is no wind or current. The sky is completely overcast. You cannot see the moon or any stars. There are no animals, birds, or fish within 50 miles of your location. The nearest ship or land mass is over 500 miles away. Question: How can you tell when it is EXACTLY MIDNIGHT ??

I love the question and the answer is likely awesome, I just hope Polaris is part of it on the horizon due North (but it is a star on a cloudy night).

When the sun goes down, it gets darker first on the eastern areas of the Eastern Standard Time zone. As the earth spins, night falls gradually from east to west.
