Anyone else remember that horrendous orange sawdust concoction the janitors threw down when some kid barfed on the carpet in school?

That intoxicating smell of freshly xeroxed papers still wet to the touch.

We were on summer vacation, mom and grandma took us shopping with them. I spent my entire summer allowance ($40) on the OG Gen1 Jetfire Transformer. My dad was SO FKN pissed I spent all my money on that thing, we were mere seconds of having to return it when grams came to our defense.

Yeah, those were some of my brothers and I's favorite toys. We had a lot of them. the original ones with die cast metal parts. We lost interest when they went all plastic and looked all cheapo and crappy. Sadly they are all in a landfill somewhere because mom most likely threw them out.

I remember being in elementary school and getting a special pass to go to the "Robotics Lab" which was, of course, a Radio Shack Armatron.

I still have one, almost new in the box, just missing a couple of the pick up targets.  Very interesting bit of tech inside.

1980 - Big Trak - Programmable Electric Toy

I was HUGE into this back in the 80's.

Loved the thing to death... found tons of cheats for it.

I used to make coffee and tea for my parents and I programmed it to get into their room.

Good times.

I think the generational divide stuff is generally big fat gray lines. A lot of it is dependent on your family structure, regional factors, placement of birth order, etc.

For example, my parents are old as fuck. I'm the youngest of 3. Bro and sis are X'ers, and we were raised by 1st Gen Boomers in the south. We didn't have the internet until I was probably 16 or so, and I was 14 when we got a shitty used PC. My household was largely analog. I identify w/ X'ers way more than Millennials, despite being born a few years into Millennial status.

On the other hand, my wife is a year older than me. Yeah, she was born closer to the X'er side, but she's the oldest of two. Grew up in a wired household that didn't want for shit, raised by the second gen of Boomers. She's a Millennial through and through.

This sort of thing was "the future" back then.  Just an toy car combined with Logo.

You can even do Logo online now.    https://www.transum.org/software/Logo/

I think Tomy had a robot thing with a remote control and microphone.  Robot servants were going to be the future.  Instead we got chicks with dicks.

I watched that in the duty office in the barracks at NAS Millington. I had just checked out that morning on orders to MCAS El Toro. I was waiting on a good friend who also got orders going to the same place and MOS. We were leaving as soon as he got back to the barracks.

One of those odd days where two major life events happened on the same day...

I remember the oil on the rectangle school pizza that you'd dab off with napkins.

Speaking of that, "the smell of rectangle school pizza" + "sawdust concoction the janitors threw down when some kid barfed".    They had to open all the windows in one wing of the elementary school when some kid yammed up lunch plus barf-absorption dust plus no air conditioning plus spring heat+humidity started making other kids barf.  Good times.

January 28, 1986.

Was sitting in my senior year physics class when the Principal cane over the PA and announced the Challenger had exploded shortly after liftoff. My Physics teacher exclaimed “that could have been Me!” Apparently he was an applicant to the teacher-in-space program. We quickly laughed at his statement and went back to the lesson.
