This is obvious in hindsight. At the time it was different. Our chaplain was talking a war of civilizations. There was no ROE. It was the Wild West.

Pretty much this. I mean what in gods name was Pakistan going to do? That was a major issue, Iran as well. We can take on just about any and all comers so that should have been the play. If things were on the up and up (of which I am unsure of) the Pakistan hiding of AQ and Taliban fighters would have been on the nightly news for the entire world to see. The Paki border is basically the equivalence of the Ho Chi Minh trail in Vietnam. Only we could really covertly attack it.

Taliban have captured Spin Boldak(Kandahar), which sources say now makes all border towns connecting Afghanistan to other countries under Taliban control.

Seized millions of Rupees from the house of an Afghan Intel Colonel. Allegedly from India to finance terrorists in Pakistan.

Here's the whole rescue story from yesterday:

Afghan Special Forces, the elite fighters are on various frontlines across the country. I tagged along with these young men for some missions. Here is what happened in Kandahar today while they were on a rescue mission after spending the whole night on a combat mission. The objective was to extract a wounded policeman trapped by Taliban insurgents on the outskirts of Kandahar city for the last 18 hours. The particular district is contested between the government and the Taliban.

I could feel the tension in the air as ASF were expecting an imminent attack from the Taliban. There was sporadic machine gun fire but all hell broke loose as the Humvees reached the extraction point. Rocket propelled grenades (RPG) and other heavy weapon were used by the Taliban against the convoy resulting in the destruction of 3 Humvees. Gunners atop the Humvees swiveled wildly, aiming fire at suspected Taliban fighters who were hard to see. The Humvee in which I was travelling with other special forces was also targeted by at least 3 RPG rounds and other weapons. I was lucky to be safe and capture the visual of one of the rockets hitting the armour plate overhead.

Attachment Attached File

The attack continued as Afghan Special Forces retreated after successfully carrying out the extraction. Caught in the middle of this ambush were several Afghans who were trapped while one of them was this boy.

There were no immediate reports of deaths among the commando unit on Tuesday, and Shah, whose leg was injured in a grenade explosion, was successfully rescued.

After leaving the neighbourhood, some of the team made their way up to a hilltop police base to regroup along with Shah.
Got a 15 minute break during almost 15 hours of back to back missions.

THe US played with a limited set of ROE drafted by spineless communist politicians more interested in how the war would effect their portfolios rather than keeping US servicemen safe and allowing them to win the war.

It was all a crock to go in, and make billions for the MIC, all the while undermining our rights at home.

What caused 9/11? Failure of agencies to communicate, a fear of be seen as “racist” and above all a an immigration system that is design to import the most backwards and hostile people into our country.

Laughable but totally true. Our military is not built for nation building, not built for sustained combat in extreme climates, and wasn't trained to communicate natively with the Afghans.

As some of you may recall, that summer prior to 9/11, the Taliban destroyed the giant Buddhas in Afghanistan.

The Liberals OUTRAGED.  Once we later began fighting the Taliban, their outrage waned.  Sure, the Taliban didn't let women and girls go to school, and they murdered Gay people, BUT they were an enemy of the United States, so that gives them a pass in the eyes of the Left.

It will be interesting to see this time around how the Liberals respond to the Taliban slaughtering gays and women, and not letting little girls learn to read.

That is tragic. I'd never make light of their sacrifice.

We have no control over the fate of Afghanistan.  If we were willing to colonize it or turn it over to the administration of a new East India Trading Company we could probably make a go of it, but that wasn't "politically correct" so we didn't do so. Instead we handed the fate of Afghanistan to Afghanistan and yet tied our military success to them resulting in a outcome we couldn't control.

However, this rapid withdrawal of U.S. forces has been terrible executed. What should have been done is that an interim plan should have been in place to "privatize the war" in Afghanistan.  Allow the Afghan government with Western financial assistance to hire private military contractors to supplement their ranks for the next ten years.  A large presence of private military contractors could have helped ease the nation into a transition period and just may have prevented the chaos we're currently seeing.

We have seen disfunctional small corrupt governments defeat insurgencies through the use of private military companies (see Executive Outcomes work in Africa).   It can be done, but the West has some P.C. aversion to the use of mercenaries for some reason even if it would save lives and protect our interests.

Erik Prince proposed something similar years ago. The politicians and generals would never allow it, because to allow them a chance to succeed with PMCs, would be an admission of their own failures of strategy and generalship.
