I've been given the opportunity to travel to Thailand for work.  I was asked last Friday if I wanted to go so I haven't had much time to plan.  It's a short 3 week trip, I'll have 2 full weekends to enjoy.

Tell me what I should do while I'm there.  During the week I'll be working and staying in Bangkok.  The weekend will give me more freedom to explore provided I'm back at the client site on Monday morning.

Also, in for Murray Head jokes.

Ayuthayya is an easy day trip. Make sure you do that.

Hit the main tourist spots in Bangkok. Ignore the guy in the tuck tuck who will tell you the [insert tourist site here] is closed and then offer to take you elsewhere. It’s a tired old scam.

Do a river tour.

I'd recommend some sights but I spent my time in Thailand in a drunken stupor getting laid or watching Thai kickboxing.

Go to the bar where you get to drink for free if you’ll box your fellow customers in their ring. Middle Son fought a Bulgarian rugby star when he was there, and they beat the shit out of each other. The other guy won the fight with a nut-kick, but my boy says that he broke several of the rugby player’s ribs.

He also recommends the floating bar that’s run by the German couple.

If you're not into the big city scene, check out Phang Nga Bay.  There are speed boat tours, bizarrely beautiful place.

I see people are already recommending things in the Phuket area. And no doubt someone will soon mention Chiang Mai.

I recommend you plan your weekends around Bangkok. Otherwise, you’ll easily spend most of your time traveling (which, in itself, can admittedly be an adventure).

However, there are cheap and ready flights to both cities. You can do a weekend at each. You will still lose a lot of time getting there and back. But, if you fear you’ll never be back, and if you get down with work stuff early enough each day to explore Bangkok during the week, that is an option. Some people are into that whirlwind tour stuff.

Sukhothai and Ayuthayya, though (the two most famous ruins) won’t be in the cards then; the former probably isn’t regardless. It’s relatively hard to get to.

Ayuthayya - be sure to pay to tour it on elephant.  Much more fun that way

Definitely do the river tour

Visit the botanical gardens - again, pay for the elephant ride.

Enjoy the many excellent restaurants in the area.  The food there is fantastic.

While you are there visit Rajawongse Clothier on Sukhumvit Road next to the Landmark Hotel.  Get a couple of tailor made suits and a dozen shirts.  They are the best dress shirts you will ever own.  Be sure to visit them the first day or two you are there.  They will take your measurements, have you come back for a final fitting, then you can pick up your stuff before you leave.

Go for a boat ride.  Rent a big, American car and go for a drive.  Lots of tourists to Thailand have done that.

Thank you for the ideas and the jokes.  Please keep them coming.  I'll continue to do research based on the information.  At this point the plan is to have me go back the first or second week of April.  I think there's a 50/50 chance that happens.  My goal for that trip would be to plan on leaving work early on a Friday to fly somewhere in the country exotic.

It may also be worth mentioning that my first work week there I'll have an acquaintance from our Australian practice joining me.  I'll have someone to go out in to the city with me.  The weekends and next two weeks I'll be by myself.  There's a team of locals that I'll be working with in country.  My experience in the past though is usually the younger team members want to spend the time drinking on our expense budget and the older team members go home to their family.

I'm constrained a bit on price.  I'm trying to keep my cost to the project reasonable while also not staying at a flop house.  I'm open to suggestions for a better hotel based on recommendation.

It wasn't meant to be.  I got a call Friday morning from our North American lead asking me if I wanted to go.  I have wanderlust so I jumped at the chance but I have a very short time to plan.  Humble brag would've been mentioning that I'm getting a first class ticket.

ETA:  I hadn't thought about diving.  I'm certified with probably 50 dives under my belt but I haven't been in about 15 years.  I'll look into seeing if I can do a refresher while I'm there.

Obviously you want one weekend in Bangkok. Go to a 5-star hotel bar, find a nice older escort. Give her $50 to show you around all of the fun spots. Tell her you're not interested in her other services. Actually works well and you'll get into places tourists would never find. Ya gotta stick with that not interested thing though. The older ones are willing to act like a proper escort (mostly). Sounds weird, but it saves alot of time if you want to find the really fun non-tourist clubs, private raves (which move around the city so its hard to find them) and speakeasy joints off the map. Of course you'll spend another $50 buying her drinks.

Then hire a private van to HuaHin, stay at the Hilton. About 3.5hr ride, but worth it.. The King lives in this town, for a reason - beautiful beach resort, great food, best nightlife. Hit the Mua Thai fights. Try the Durian. The whole place is small enough to just get everywhere on foot, but you can rent a scooter if you want. Right side roads so its a bit sketchy.

Ive traveled many, many times to Thailand for business (lucky), and I behave myself (reasonably) when I'm there so my style may not be for you...

my friend went there and one of his bang sessions the condom broke.

He came back thinking he was going to die. Couple tests later found he had no diseases.

That was a tough couple of weeks hoping he didn’t get something terminal.
