Obviously you want one weekend in Bangkok. Go to a 5-star hotel bar, find a nice older escort. Give her $50 to show you around all of the fun spots. Tell her you're not interested in her other services. Actually works well and you'll get into places tourists would never find. Ya gotta stick with that not interested thing though. The older ones are willing to act like a proper escort (mostly). Sounds weird, but it saves alot of time if you want to find the really fun non-tourist clubs, private raves (which move around the city so its hard to find them) and speakeasy joints off the map. Of course you'll spend another $50 buying her drinks. Then hire a private van to HuaHin, stay at the Hilton. About 3.5hr ride, but worth it.. The King lives in this town, for a reason - beautiful beach resort, great food, best nightlife. Hit the Mua Thai fights. Try the Durian. The whole place is small enough to just get everywhere on foot, but you can rent a scooter if you want. Right side roads so its a bit sketchy. Ive traveled many, many times to Thailand for business (lucky), and I behave myself (reasonably) when I'm there so my style may not be for you... I see people are already recommending things in the Phuket area. And no doubt someone will soon mention Chiang Mai. I recommend you plan your weekends around Bangkok. Otherwise, you’ll easily spend most of your time traveling (which, in itself, can admittedly be an adventure). View Quote Even the air quality in Bangkok is better. And agreed - stick with the Bangkok area. Take a trip down to Pattaya for fun. |

Soi Cowboy was looking pretty tired, too, but then again I had SWMBO with me, so she wasn't interested in what I used to be interested in before I met her. |

If you're into WW2 history take a day trip to Kanchanaburi and visit the war museum and the Bridge On the River Kwai. We were there last February and used Tour with Tong to get a private, personalized tour for the day with a guide. It was fairly inexpensive and well worth it.
If you're into the girls and bar scene there is Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy, they're within walking distance of each other. It was definitely an eye opener when my wife saw a hooker with her hands down an old mans pants while they negotiated a deal. |

Go to the bar where you get to drink for free if you’ll box your fellow customers in their ring. Middle Son fought a Bulgarian rugby star when he was there, and they beat the shit out of each other. I was there last week. Since you only have the weekends, and I only stayed in Bangkok one night so I don't know much about it, definitely go check out JJ Market on the weekend. We took the BTS there as its faster than tuktuk or car/bus. One thing I REALLY wish we had time for but didn't was to go on the Damnoen Saduak floating market tour. Go check it out for me

The travel agencies around Khao San Road offer all kinds of trips out of town, day trips and longer if you need any more ideas once in country. Also, when dining out at the little street stalls and restaurants, make sure to try lots of different things. Even if you don't like something or can't finish all the food, it's so cheap that you can try all kinds of food for dirt cheap.

I've been given the opportunity to travel to Thailand for work. I was asked last Friday if I wanted to go so I haven't had much time to plan. It's a short 3 week trip, I'll have 2 full weekends to enjoy. Tell me what I should do while I'm there. During the week I'll be working and staying in Bangkok. The weekend will give me more freedom to explore provided I'm back at the client site on Monday morning. Also, in for Murray Head jokes. View Quote If your work is paying for the airfare you should see if they would allow you 1 or 2 weeks vacation there after your work and before you fly back home. The later flight would not cost your employer any more money and you could use your vacation time, if you had any, to stay longer on your dime. |

Thank you for the ideas and the jokes. Please keep them coming. I'll continue to do research based on the information. At this point the plan is to have me go back the first or second week of April. I think there's a 50/50 chance that happens. My goal for that trip would be to plan on leaving work early on a Friday to fly somewhere in the country exotic. It may also be worth mentioning that my first work week there I'll have an acquaintance from our Australian practice joining me. I'll have someone to go out in to the city with me. The weekends and next two weeks I'll be by myself. There's a team of locals that I'll be working with in country. My experience in the past though is usually the younger team members want to spend the time drinking on our expense budget and the older team members go home to their family. Le Meridien - off Surawong road I'm constrained a bit on price. I'm trying to keep my cost to the project reasonable while also not staying at a flop house. I'm open to suggestions for a better hotel based on recommendation. Thanks...I was wanting to hit up a clothier while I'm there. It wasn't meant to be. I got a call Friday morning from our North American lead asking me if I wanted to go. I have wanderlust so I jumped at the chance but I have a very short time to plan. Humble brag would've been mentioning that I'm getting a first class ticket. ETA: I hadn't thought about diving. I'm certified with probably 50 dives under my belt but I haven't been in about 15 years. I'll look into seeing if I can do a refresher while I'm there. I'll look into seeing if I can do a refresher while I'm there. The infamous clubs are mostly in the Sukhumwit area. You can get there by Metro, though. It really is a scene you need to at least see once. You just might feel dirty afterward. The Siam area is where I stayed last time I was there. It’s good for Western-style shopping. We had a clothes and grocery mission, primarily. I don’t think you can go wrong in any of the areas the major hotel chains have properties. You can go a lot cheaper with an Asian branded hotel, though. You pay a premium for familiar brands. Citadines, based out of Singapore, can really offer good deals. I think their hotels in Bangkok are all in the Sukhumvit area, though. Sometimes the European brands, like Novotel or Ibis, offer great deals relative to the big American names. The Holiday Inn Express in the Siam area is an incredible deal, but low in amenities and the breakfast sucks. Because of the free breakfast and brand, though, it can get just slam packed with Chinese tourists. |
