Anyone else remember way back when this shook things up in the automotive world?

I had a 1994 model Thunderbird when I was in college. It had the 4.6L V8 and got what I considered to be excellent gas mileage at the time. It seemed to have plenty of power and handled really well. I liked it. They were also rather good looking cars.

It looked just like this....

That is what I drove my date to prom in in 1994... it was awesome!  Borrowed it from a family friend, it was niiiice.

Yep--- my ex-wife owned one and it was what I would call a "tap the gas" car.  You only had to tap the gas pedal lightly to go fast.   It was nothing compared to her other car though, a Lexus SC400 with V8 engine.

The thunder chicken was a fun car to drive.  In its time of course.  I wonder what a fully restored one would sell under a mecum auction.

And the styling is really dated 80's now, but IIRC it was pretty aerodynamic at the time.

I kinda liked it!

I retrospect, it kinda seems, to me, to be Ford meeting the mid to late 80s aero styling of AMG.  Cool indeed.

I went to buy one last year from a dealer. It was the 1997 Sport model with the 4.7 V8.
30,000 miles for $3500.
It was sold  a few minutes before I got there to an old couple who had no clue.

I had a 1988 Sport model with the 5.0 V8.
Best highway cruiser I ever had.
Stock not as fast the turbo, but better to drive, by not having to wait for turbo to spool up.
155 hp Torque net: 265 lb-ft
base curb weight: 3450 lbs
estimated acceleration: 0- 60 mph 9.9 s

If my memory is correct, the SC was one of the first to hit the 3800 lbs mark.   The other was the Mitsubishi 3000 GT VR4.

I had an '86 XR4Ti that I really liked and was a sharp car in its day. I bought it used as they were stupid expensive at the time new. My only regret was that it was an auto but it was a fun car even then.

I recently saw an '86 SVO on Craigslist and really needed to talk myself out of it.

Lol was thinking the same!

I think it took a little bit from the W124 E-Class and W126 S-Class coupes of the day, and the monotone paint was an AMG hallmark back then.

And power-wise the top of the line E-class had a whopping 180 hp, while AMG made a maximum of around 390 hp IIRC from the S-class M117 V8 with custom 24 valve heads for the Hammer.  So 200-something from the factory at the time was pretty decent I think!

If I won big lottery tomorrow, I'd no doubt chase down a restorer to secure and prepare an original Hammer.  That's the stuff that still makes my blood boil to this day, in a good way.

My neighbor has an 80's Cougar. One thing that was nicer about Fords was how you only had to lift the hood to tap on the solenoid instead of crawling under to the starter like on a Chevy.

Yea, nice thing about Ford parts spanning like 1955 to 1995 is when parts go bad on my 72 Mustang, I can normally grab something off my Dad's 91 F-250 to make due.

Those early 90's Taurus sho's were sneaky fast.  Around 6sec 0.60 iirc.  That was real fast for a sedan back then.  Almost bought one once.

Yeah, I remember. I still own this one.

Nothing too crazy, but runs 12.4 @ 110. Lots of weight reduction, suspension work, brakes, etc. Built more for autocrossing than drag racing.

I had a 1993 LX with the wimpy V6.  But it rode so well on the highway that you didn't realize how fast you were going.  I took it up to 120mph once on the interstate (yes, I was young and dumb).  The faster you went, the flatter it planted itself toward the ground.

In 1989 you could buy a Camaro with a naturally aspirated L98 rated at 245 hp/ 345 ft-lbs.

The Super Chicken!

It blows head gaskets for breakfast, IIRC.

I almost bought one used...I absolutely LOVED that car, until I took it to my cousin (...who was a professional mechanic) and had him look it over good.

Dear GOD, what I almost stepped in.

Thankfully I didn't buy it.

1987 Buick Regal GNX showed Ford that GM turbocharged V6 > Ford supercharged V6.

Buick underrated the GNX at 276 hp (206 kW) and a very substantial
360 lb·ft (488 N·m) of torque (actual output is 300hp/224kW and
420lb·ft/569N·m)
