Ford dealership got one of those in. Red, with a defective speedometer.

That is what I drove my date to prom in in 1994... it was awesome! Borrowed it from a family friend, it was niiiice.

Yep--- my ex-wife owned one and it was what I would call a "tap the gas" car. You only had to tap the gas pedal lightly to go fast. It was nothing compared to her other car though, a Lexus SC400 with V8 engine.

The thunder chicken was a fun car to drive. In its time of course. I wonder what a fully restored one would sell under a mecum auction.

Yeah I remember that. Supercharged power, neat for the day. And the styling is really dated 80's now, but IIRC it was pretty aerodynamic at the time. I kinda liked it! |

If my memory is correct, the SC was one of the first to hit the 3800 lbs mark. The other was the Mitsubishi 3000 GT VR4.

I remember the SC, the SHO, the SVO and the Merkur XR4Ti all out at the same time at the local dealer.

I bought it used as they were stupid expensive at the time new. My only regret was that it was an auto but it was a fun car even then. I recently saw an '86 SVO on Craigslist and really needed to talk myself out of it. |

I remember the commercial at the time for the Thunderbird... a well dressed man gets out and looks at it longingly. The tag line was, "Parking is such sweet sorrow."

many production V8s at the time had under 300 hp....anything with 200 plus hp was impressive.

I retrospect, it kinda seems, to me, to be Ford meeting the mid to late 80s aero styling of AMG. Cool indeed. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I think it took a little bit from the W124 E-Class and W126 S-Class coupes of the day, and the monotone paint was an AMG hallmark back then. And power-wise the top of the line E-class had a whopping 180 hp, while AMG made a maximum of around 390 hp IIRC from the S-class M117 V8 with custom 24 valve heads for the Hammer. So 200-something from the factory at the time was pretty decent I think! |

My neighbor has an 80's Cougar. One thing that was nicer about Fords was how you only had to lift the hood to tap on the solenoid instead of crawling under to the starter like on a Chevy.

Yeah I'd love an original Hammer!
Or a 500E. I could live with that too. |

Those early 90's Taurus sho's were sneaky fast. Around 6sec 0.60 iirc. That was real fast for a sedan back then. Almost bought one once.

I dam near bought one, but getting a house turned out to be a smarter choice, I still have the house.

When I bought my SVO it came with an '87 TC parts car. I still have the SVO.

Had a black 90 SC. The jbl system was cool. Separate CD player and the automatic adjustable ride kicked ass. I loved that car. Super fast! And I was coming off an 89 5.0 GT when I bought it too

tell you what, changing out the headlight bulb was a p.i.t.a. in that thing. only had like 1/2 inch clearance to get the bulb out.

I had a 1993 LX with the wimpy V6. But it rode so well on the highway that you didn't realize how fast you were going. I took it up to 120mph once on the interstate (yes, I was young and dumb). The faster you went, the flatter it planted itself toward the ground.

Compared the the same year V-8 Camaro? 170hp and 255 Ft-lbs? No mullet requirement? Maybe not a monster, but in that era a rare performance piece. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Wow, it had 215 hp and 315 torque... what a monster... Maybe not a monster, but in that era a rare performance piece. In 1989 you could buy a Camaro with a naturally aspirated L98 rated at 245 hp/ 345 ft-lbs. |

I got the chance to drive an SC that had been hotrodded . I was surprised at how hard it launched when I stabbed it to the floor from a slow roll . It had lots of engine work done and more boost

The Super Chicken!
It blows head gaskets for breakfast, IIRC. I almost bought one used...I absolutely LOVED that car, until I took it to my cousin (...who was a professional mechanic) and had him look it over good. Dear GOD, what I almost stepped in. Thankfully I didn't buy it. |

Quoted: Quoted: Yeah I remember that. Supercharged power, neat for the day. 1987 Buick Regal GNX showed Ford that GM turbocharged V6 > Ford supercharged V6. Buick underrated the GNX at 276 hp (206 kW) and a very substantial 360 lb·ft (488 N·m) of torque (actual output is 300hp/224kW and 420lb·ft/569N·m) |
