The Super Chicken!

It blows head gaskets for breakfast, IIRC.

I almost bought one used...I absolutely LOVED that car, until I took it to my cousin (...who was a professional mechanic) and had him look it over good.

Dear GOD, what I almost stepped in.

Thankfully I didn't buy it.

I remember replacing a head gasket on one in the 90's. It didn't just pop the gasket, it also took a small chunk out of the deck between two cylinders.

I just sold my 1988 Turbo Coupe to my brother, it only had 85k miles on it.
He had it for only 2 weeks and painted the rims Black.

Probably the most amazing vehicle Ford sold at the time was the F-150.

300 6 cylinder with the standard 5spd/dual tanks(there was a fire at Ford's tranny plant, autos were extremely rare!),damned thing had like 600 plus miles range.

Mustang, $14-16k out the door, very nicely equipped.

T-bird was a car with a helluva smooth ride,as was the CV.

Taurus SHO, only had one show up at the dealership, helluva car! First American 4 door sedan that could hold it's own against BMW and Mercedes.

I had a 95 with the 4.6 V8. One wheeled burn outs were spectacular.

There's a 88 Turbo Coupe sitting 2 blocks from me right now. No cancer which is pretty good for WI.

Judging a 25+ year old car with modern eyes is kind of dumb. At the time, those were respectable numbers. 1989 Mustang 5.0 had 225HP and a fully loaded 89 Camaro IROC-Z with the 350ci TBI motor had 240 HP. For that time in history, the TBSC a good looking car with decent power, handling and overall ride.

Maybe not a monster, but in that era a rare performance piece.

So a 350 making marginally more power? Ok.

Also, I just realized the 305 from that year made less HP but a little bit more torque than my NA 3.0L straight 6 Toyota.

Nothing too crazy, but runs 12.4 @ 110. Lots of weight reduction, suspension work, brakes, etc. Built more for autocrossing than drag racing.

Had a '85 I bought used in '91 and loved that car. It wasn't fast by today's standards but quick for its time for sure, the electronics in it were buggy as shit. Maybe Ford borrowed Lucas' stuff but it was a fun car. I had a sorority chick in college who thought it was a Masarati, (I corrected her after I had known her for quite some time,) but there were very, very few of them around. It was very much an 'exotic' car but a Mustang GT of that era was faster but where the XR4Ti excelled was handling.

It looked just like this....

Yamaha engine.

I ain't saying that as a knock.  Ford had the good sense to contract with someone who could build a 4 valve per cylinder DOHC V6.

I had a 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX that I purchased new after graduating from college.  The intake manifold blew on it, the transmission had constant problems, and the rear end had to be replaced twice.  In 1999 I traded it in on a 2000 F150 while the dealership was waiting on parts to repair the engine for the second time.

EDIT:  I still think the SC was cool despite the problems that I had with mine.

My daily driver from 2004 to 2011 was a 93 Davey Allison 5.0 HO Tbird, paid $4K cash, put Koni sports, Eibach springs and good tires on it, and built some braces, made it a whole new car, scared plenty of people on cloverleafs...
Cobra heads and cam, so it would keep up with a stock SC...
Swapped in rear discs from a SC, and had a M5R2 5spd to swap in but never got around to it.

I don't buy it, these are just magazine numbers, but, they have the top V8 85 Mustang running 0-60 in 6.4 seconds with a 14.9 second 1/4 mile.

They have the 1985 TC with a 0-60 in 10.4 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 17.7 seconds.

Ford is not going to build a Thunderbird that is faster than the Ford flagship fast car which is the Mustang.
