Damn it, this thread has made me break out some old music from days long gone. I am drinking Fat Tire and reminiscing now. Lot of travel and fun.

I've seen them many times.....the Jerry Garcia Band too. The Grateful Dead channel is one of my programmed stations on satellite radio. Oddly, I love guns, can't stand liberal/progressives, I'd sooner be whacked in the head with a hammer then to wear a tie-dye, I'm horrendously politically incorrect, hate hippies, and on occasion enjoy listening to bands like Blood For Blood, Pantera and Slipknot.....LOUD. They never really "did it" for me.
Several of my older cousins are/were huge deadheads. Used to follow them around and were fully into the lifestyle. They knew I am a big music fan and tried to get me into it, it just didn't strike a chord with me. Trying to think of a good way to put it. I respect the Dead for what they were and I understand the passion their fans have for the music and surrounding lifestyle, it just isn't my gig. And I say that as someone who likes music from that era and is a fan of other genre defying bands like Primus and Pink Floyd. |

Hardly listen to much music anymore unless I'm drunk on memory lane, but I like the dead. Saw them at the Omni in Atlanta in 95. Wasn't the best show I've ever seen but glad to say I saw them.

I was always a Dead fan. It's just good music. View Quote Their shows were often "hosted" and "catered" by local Hells Angels bikers. Big Gulp size beers for 1$, burgers & fries cheap too! Ya, they got stoned and fucked up on stage and the music generally suffered but there were more time when they just fuckin' rocked. Lots of guest musicians. You never knew what direction the show would go. If it sucked, you could walk out. |

Never really liked it a lot when I was younger, but I enjoy it a lot more as I've gotten older.

Got to see them 7 times in the mid 90's before Jerry died. Last show for me was the one in Noblesville IN where fans crashed the gate and destroyed some stuff. Have also seen Ratdog, Further fest, and The Dead (Warren Haines playing in Jerry's place). My favorite era was when Pigpen was still around, love me some 'Easy wind', 'Lovelight', 'King bee', 'Hurts me too'. Jamming to 'Cosmic Charlie' right now.

For age reference, I'm 40.
I got into Phish last high school, early college. Never listened to the Dead because all the Dead fans in my school were mostly scumbag wierdos. A few years ago, I started listening to the them on Pandora. I'm hooked, love them. Sugar Magnolia and Dark Muddy River are my favorites. |

I am not a rabid fan but I have always liked their music. For all the Hippie association they seem to have, their music is more of a folk, rock and country fusion to me.
Funny story, a few years ago, my Father (born in 1924 and a career military man) and I spent a month fishing in Alaska. When we picked up the rent-a-car in Anchorage I popped a Grateful l Dead mix CD in the player. Half-way to Soldotna, my Dad asked; "who is this band? I really like it!". I told him it was the Grateful Dead and he said he had heard of them but always thought only smelly hippies listened to them. I replied ; "oh not ONLY smelly hippies". In his 80s, my Father discovered something that he didn't know he liked because of me. It is a major milestone in a relationship when Fathers learn something from their Sons. Those mix CDs became the soundtrack for our summer of fishing whether we were on the road or drinking whiskey by a fire. When I hear "Truckin" it always takes me back in my mind to driving in Alaska, sleeping in cheap motels, drinking and fishing with my Dad. What a long, strange trip it was. |

I saw the Warlocks play Darkstar at the Hampton Coliseum in 89, if that means anything to you. Saw the Dead play in Maryland, too. I enjoyed the music, hated the fans.
