Fourscore and seven days ago (give or take) our honklers brought forth, on this internet, a new meme, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all honklers are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great meme war, testing whether that meme, or any meme so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that hive mind, as a final archive for those memes, that that meme might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate—we cannot honk—this ground. The brave honklers, who posted here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we honk here, but it can never forget what they honked here. It is for us the woke, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. @Regulatori, are you familiar with Plato's Cave? It is an allegory told by the Greek philosopher Plato in his work Republic to compare "the effect of education and the lack of it on our nature". It is written as a dialogue between Plato's brother Glaucon and his mentor Socrates, narrated by the latter.  A short video on it is available here.

I've been a big Plato fan ever since Republic. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It within Republic where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this lecture hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist.
