it is my firm belief that the writing was best in the original.

My favorite movie of all time. Gonna see it on the big screen this week.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Childs is a Thing. Read the comic books. They're canon

I still think the original 1951 version was better.
But I still love this one too.

James Arness of Gunsmoke fame played the thing in the original.

It's the 1st movie I can remember that had overlapping dialog.
People talking over each other just like real life.
It's a fantastic movie. The 1982 version is excellent too.

Me and some guys went to see it in a theatre the first week it came out. Scared the bejesus out of us. During that scene with the dog/thing, half a dozen women got up and jogged out, most of them holding their hands over their mouths.

I love The Thing and its prequel (2011) also.

I wish they would make more films in this "universe".  You could put it in any setting.

Maybe a Viking ship sailing across the sea could come across The Thing and the whole movie could deal with them fighting it.

That's kind of what my "Collapse" series is about. It gets loose in a 'galactic empire' situation and kills EVERYBODY, just a few tiny pockets of life left isolated and in terror.

Hawks and Hecht always worked well with each other.
Screenplay by:
Charles Lederer, Uncredited, Howard Hawks, Ben Hecht

Toss in Lederer and you have a trifecta of perfection. Three pros who worked well with each other. Think something akin to the Cohen brothers, it's hard to tell where one left off and another took over.
