I have a Garmin Zumo XT on mine, and it’s done everything I wanted it to do.

Started a moto trip from the Mexico border to Canada yesterday that will last until next weekend, Lord willing. So far.... border fence> Ruidosa> Taos for lunch> Denver tonight.

Going to spend a chunk ilof time near Mount Rushmore, Crazy horse etc to ride the roads and see sights, run to the border for a night then back to SD to cloverleaf the area, then Denver for a few days, then Ruidosa, and finally home.

Man I'm so jealous!

The kid keeps me pretty busy, so I don't get to ride nearly as much as I'd like, but I still manage a thousand miles a month if I can help it.

What did you do for your back/hips on the longhaul rides? After just a couple of days my hips are killing me.

1000 miles a month is legit!  Time will fly and you'll be in that prime zone for more free time.

Oddly my back never really hurt hurts, but just gets mildly sore all over.  The hips will kinda be sore for the first two days but then it's like a break through and no more real hip/back pain for the rest of the trip.

I may try lower foot pegs to see if that helps.

Got lots of riding in around the Black Hills yesterday and today.  Seen Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, Sturgis, Deadwood, Custer, Iron Mountain Road/ Hwy 16a,  hwy 244, hwy 16, hwy 385, and Spearfish Canyon Highway/14a .  Tomorrow I'll see if I can add Needles/Hwy 87 to the list on the way to Canada.

So far I've saw 1 Buffalo,  2 white mountain goats, and lots of chipmunks.  The tunnels and twisties were fun on Iron Mountain road and Spearfish Canyon road was fun as well.  Didn't take a lot of photos as today was mainly trying to ride the twisties as hard as possible while the weather was great and traffic light.

The ride up here from Blackhawk, CO to Estes Park, CO was top notch as well.  Sprinkled through the trip there has been a few sneaky sheriff's and state troopers.... my Valentine 1 gen 2/JBV1 app has came in clutch so far.

Canada has now been checked off.  Visited Theodore Roosevelt National Park on the way up which was decent.  Saw lots of Buffalo and pheasants along the road but that was about it for wildlife.

I really haven’t used it much on single track, but I use it a lot riding fire roads in the mountains of WV and VA. It has been extremely accurate so far.

If you guys are really going off into the boonies, I recommend having a second GPS as a backup. It doesn't have to be the fanciest with all the bells and whistles, but just one that can help you find your way back to civilization.

I've spent enough time on tiny backroads in rural areas where the intended "road" goes into a swamp that I am not going to attempt on my own, or just dead ends, and I would have a hard time finding my way to a bigger road if my primary GPS failed. Just my two cents.

I always carry offline maps on my phone just in case.

People seem to like those. Do the downloaded maps ever "expire" or go away for some reason? Have you tested them out often enough to have confidence in them being there when you need them?

I tend to think of cell phones as fragile things that eventually stop working without warning, but that's just me.

I've never had a problem with the majority of apps.  However, I have a folder on my home page with all my navigation apps.  I typically update the 2 or 3 I use the most before I head out.

My iPhone is fragile, but it stays in my pack.   I just bought another dual sport and I'm trying to decide whether I want to invest in a Moto GPS like the XT2, a navigation GPS like the Montana, or just buy a military-grade android phone and mount that to my bars.   I know lots of people who do that latter with good success.

I have an old Montana as my secondary GPS. I have both topo and street maps on it. I run it in portrait mode with topos displayed while my primary GPS (Nav V) is in landscape mode with street maps showing. I don't know the current marketing, but it was sold as a handheld device for outdoor use that also did some (not all) road navigation functions. (no detour function, for example). My Montana works ok for navigation, although it doesn't provide any turn-by-turn voice instructions, so you need to be looking over at it more than I prefer. Still, it is fine as a secondary unit, or for hiking with.

Do you have an example of a military grade cell phone? I was not aware such a thing existed.

Versys 300x vs CB500x vs NC700x/750x?

Local only for now, probably the CB500x or NC700/750x if further runs

Some of your concerns won't necessarily be mine because this will be primarily for off-road.  I'd really only look at it when I come across trail intersections.  Street navigation will be minimal.

Some "military grade" that have been suggested to me (not really military, just tough) are the Ulefone Armor, Kyocera Duraforce, Doogee, Oukitel, and Blackview.  They are rugged android phones that many people don't even activate, they just use them for dedicated GPS with a variety of applications.

I am very happy with the Versys. Handles great, decent power, reliable, fun.
