Wife is going to be pissed..... $50 more of 5lbs purple, 3lbs light purple, and 3lbs clear fire-pit glass crystals are on their way. View Quote You might be able to heat the glass up getting it real hot then drop it into water to let it rapidly cool and fracture. WATCH THE HELL OUT FOR SHATTERING/EXPLODING PRINCE RUPERT'S DROP. Google it. But tiny bits of fractured glass might be able to be turned into the crystal like looking inner surface of a geode. Sharp edges could maybe be knocked off with a rotary tumbler/rock polisher. |

Update 9/1 This student had a fantastic idea today, and at first I said "no" but after talking it out with her, I think it's doable. We were going to cut out the back of the form as seen in the photo, then cover with a rock mix to look like our other taxidermy mounts, but then she suggested we make it look like a geode. Hmmmm... I didn't think it would work, but after we talked out the idea, it should look pretty cool. We are going to put traditional rock mix around the outer edge, then use black glass to tile the insides. I'm going to look around and see if we can find some kind of cheap crystals we could incorporate into the inside. We are thinking dark purple or black. Anyone have a link to something we can get for cheap? We were then thinking of putting a mirror under the Unicorn, and make it look like part of a pond to help show off the work above. I'm really liking where this is taking us. She used the generously donated saws-all to cut back into the form and cut out the different shapes. Some were pried out with a screwdriver and broke off giving us even more textures. We will re-apply burlap, then the other materials. ETA: fiber optics were delivered today. Some of those strands could also be incorporated into the geode portion of the mount. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4398/36795030112_8eab1dc771_h.jpg View Quote I'd post links but I'm on my phone. The results seem to have several cheap solutions for the geode interior. Always enjoy your build threads. Thanks! |

You won't find taxidermy in any art history book ever published since the beginning of time. That's not a put-down of people who do it or people who like it. But unlike the visionary Dada movement, calling it art does not make it so. View Quote |

Sunday Today on NBC is doing a story on Powell, WY next.
Wonder if it is about taxidermy and whether it is art or not. |

Guns,
You need to make a Railroad style "Unicorn Crossing" sign. |

Lots of discussion on the length of the horn, huh?
I am sure lots of jokes and such amongst the kids, and likely times you had to just look away to laugh, or not make a comment. |

Emailed the links to this thread (and the locomotive thread) to my 16 y.o. artistically inclined daughter.
She made it clear that she wants a unicorn t-shirt, don't let her down. She has my sub shirt, I ordered the wrong size. |

I'd rock the Lego gripped 1911 OC'd at Walmart wearing a 3 Unicorns shirt... especially if the backside was 3 geodes...

Unicorns. Don't stop there. Winged unicorn (pegasus unicorn). Have some creative writing students write something up for them and how overhunting made them extinct. View Quote |

Well, it's going to look exactly like a REAL unicorn, it just won't have a hairy skin. It will have a horses mane, as my crazy students have already volunteered their horses tails . We are going to sculpt a horn with epoxy putty to look like a gemsbok's. We were going to buy one, but I think they can sculpt one. It will prove my point even more by doing it that way. Dude... I guarantee you people would pay GOOD money for a well-done unicorn shoulder mount. I don't know where you'd find horse capes to make it look realistic but there has to be a source out there somewhere. We are going to sculpt a horn with epoxy putty to look like a gemsbok's. I probably still have the approach and landing patch from when I visited Cape Canaveral back in 77 as a kid.

My wife has some pretty good ideas (Don't tell her). I'm just glad it came out looking ok. I mean, I was the one that put it together. Usually If it doesn't have lego bricks, bolts or roll pins I'm crap at making things. View Quote |
