I’ve been to Odd, WV. It’s near Pax and Beckley. It’s not a place you stop. It is literally a place you can disappear and never be found and it’s been rumored to have happened a few times.

Quoted: Back in 2005 I was in a part of Afghanistan between Herat and Farah up in the mountains. No one had been up there from the previous rotation and they didn’t think anyone else had been earlier. We didn’t see anything for days until we found a tiny little spot that was green. When we got there and found a village. They thought we were Russian. You could see the gene pool was shallow and almost dry. We dropped off some food and blankets then we left that area and never went back. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: Yep... Quoted: My parents ran into a situation like this a few years ago in Southeast Oklahoma, deep in the woods looking around old homesteads. They were doing some genealogy research and asking too many questions according to some locals, things got a little uncomfortable until they realized my dad was kin. The Kiamichi Mountains that run between OK and AR hold a lot of secrets and little enclaves of families. View Quote When I lived in Detroit, I was doing some mining related work in eastern Kentucky quite a few years back. Wayyyyy back in the hollers. The client was a bit, how would you say, guarded and suspicious, not quite hostile though, when dealing with me. Made semi-snide references to me being from "the city" and "up north". Until I mentioned that actually my mother's side of the family was from his area, and that the patriarch was buried not too far from where we were. "What's the family name?" Then his demeanor completely brightened when I told him. "Hell, we're kin!" as he gave me a big ol' slap on the back. |

It amazes me how they all manage to stay alive for this long with their diminished capacity. I actually feel really bad for them. Who brings them food? How do they deal with hygiene and illness?
Wonder how old they all are? I'm guessing they are a lot younger then they look. |

Quoted: This is why abortion should be legal and easy to access View Quote I agree with you mostly, except some of them don't know they're pregnant until the baby is born. There should be a program that will pay people cash for getting themselves sterilized early in life. I know of some families like this. One family would catch stray dogs and cats and tie them to a dog house. Their yard was full of starving animals. Sometimes I would find road kill and give it to which ever animal looked the most emaciated. I was very concerned that I might get shot while on their property. No one ever said anything to me though. That was in the 70s when I was a kid. Now they can be charged with mistreating animals. The aspca, the humane society and local law enforcement will see that this happens as little as possible. |

It is a horrifying, depressing place. Don't ever come here. |

Quoted: This is the normal way of life in WV. It is a horrifying, depressing place. Don't ever come here. View Quote Around 20 years ago, I spent approximately 6 months living in WV and working at Snowshoe. There were some depressed areas, obvious poor whites, and some hippies. What stood out to me the most were the empty buildings that seemed to exist in every small town due to industries dying out, and how beautiful most of the state was. |

Quoted: Why does inbreeding make people all deformed ? I like living a sheltered life and not having to deal with that shit, although my tax dollars probably keep them alive. View Quote Because when you have pathological recessive genes that cause deformities and mental retardation the chances are reasonably good when you outbreed that they will be canceled by healthy dominate genes from the other parent. When you have generation after generation of inbreeding, everyone's got the same recessive genetic abnormalities so when a breeding occurs the chances are high that the offspring will receive two copies of the pathological gene and the trait will be expressed. What you see in the video in the OP isn't the result of a single inbreeding event, which has only a slightly increased chance of genetic abnormalities. What you're looking at is generation after generation of inbreeding. Probably going back well over 100 years. |

We brought two on that operation and both said it was extremely difficult to talk with them. Those guys were both smart. You kind of have to be to know three languages fluently and run the local politics of working for Americans. Best guess is a bastardized dialect of Dari along with the accompanying problems of intelligence and speech impediments. The village elder had a trapdoor rifle. That was about the most advanced piece of technology there and I didn’t see the normal Tonda motorbikes and hilux you normally see. Not even a bicycle. It was weird. They would always come stare us for a bit and leave but EVERYONE came out in this village. |

Definitely sad by most standards but life is only what you desire, if you set expectations low then low is what you get.
However this is definitely a situation where they should be sterilized for their own and society’s protection. |

There is a large family near where I live in the ramapo mountains on the NY/NJ border called the "Jackson Whites" They are a mix of white, indian and black and have pretty much been only breeding with each other form the 1700's. They killed 2 ramapo cops decades ago, made a movie and HBO documentary about them. Scary folks they are.
