4.5l diesel, manual transmission, locking diffs. And that's about it. All we get is pimped out shit. I understand that it wouldn't make enough money because people are soft and want giant luxury cars as trucks.

A bit ugly but a 4.5 diesel would haul some freight.

Not a big fan of diesel myself , doesn't seem to make much sense until you get up into a heavy pickup with large towed loads but that is me.

I am sort of looking for a pickup used/new but this four door crap is killing me . I get that lots of folks want the extra cab space (at least that is what is selling) but the extra length in the bed is more useable than the cab

The bed extends 8' beyond the rear wheels. I'm glad they don't import it. Because it's retarded.

It probably has a lot to do with the "chicken tax" on trucks and utility vehicles.  The tariffs would make them too expensive and no one would buy one.

They could import it. But after getting it to pass emissions, crash testing and adding all required safety equipment, it would cost $30k.

So it’ll be ugly, impractical, and cost as much as a base Tacoma.

In the 1940s, Europe got effed up in a war.

In the 50s, their factories were rebuilt and focused on economy models. At the same time, we figured out a way to start MASS PRODUCING chickens in the first factory farms. So chicken prices fell.

By around 1960, VW started making a little air cooled pickup truck. It was thrifty and the Big 3 hated it.

But our cheap chickens were a favorite in Europe, where chickens were raised traditionally on family farms and sold at local markets or to the local butcher. Chicken was expensive.

Several European governments put an import tax on our chickens, and we put an import tax of like 20% on light duty pickup trucks. Or maybe I have those mixed up and reversed.

The tax remains today. Which is why the Subaru Brat was sold with two plastic seats bolted into the bed (to be a four seater and avoid the tax) and why, for a while, Ford Transit vans were shipped to Baltimore with glass windows in them, which were then removed after the vans landed and the utility blank steel panels installed.

That’s the rough outline. YouTube vids and online articles have the real details.

So a trade war which started in post-war Europe between cheap factory farmed chickens and cheap VW pickups is why you can’t have a good light duty pickup truck.

You got it right - europoors hated cheap chickens, so we retaliated on cheap VW car/truck-looking things.  It also managed to end import of cheap Japanese light trucks, as well.  I think it's like a 25% tax, so it effectively barred any competition to domestic light truck production.

I think it was about 5-10 years back that Mahindra was going to branch out from their US tractor market and start importing their small pickup with similar specs. Manual everything, turbodiesel, solid axles, etc. After trying to deal with the EPA and safety orgs they eventually just gave up. But at least it paved the way for importing the Roxor.

Shame, the Mahindra looked like a perfect farm, utility or hunting rig. Something US auto makers just won't build.

They do import them, but only as mine vehicles (or they were anyways, I assume they still do).  That 4.5 turbo diesel is a great engine and easily modded to get even more hp.  It's a very durable and reliable vehicle for folks who need a utility vehicle whether for work or outback travel and ute beds/trays are more common overseas than here.

On a side note, the Jeepneys in the Philippines are built on all types of chassis; Mitsubishis are pretty common starting points these days.

Most likely but those rules have been around for decades. There are a myriad of things that need to be done to a foreign vehicle to make it importable to the United States and Toyota probably does not want to bother. By the time they got finished with all of the U.S. mandated additions, it would not be worth it. Also it is right hand drive as the Japanese drive on the left.

Courtesy of that son of a bitch Lyndon B. Johnson

The Chicken Tax is a 25 percent tariff on light trucks (and originally on potato starch, dextrin, and brandy) imposed in 1964 by the United States under President Lyndon B. Johnson in response to tariffs placed by France and West Germany on importation of U.S. chicken.
