Plus in could take 2 weeks to die and lots of people are not at the death point yet. Or it could be a lot less with many infections that are unknown because they are not that sick and don't go to the hospital. It is too early to tell. |

I found this spreadsheet that’s being updated with data from the dxy.cn website, which is a Chinese medical community site. It’s maintained with notes on updates values. There are obviously many unknown variables at play regarding the infectiousness, but sanitation and personal hygiene may indeed be a major factor. |

Asians (particularly Japanese) have a social norm of everyday normal people masking when they are sick, or just preventative when well. When is the last time you saw people masking outside of a hospital in the US? Americans go out and cough without cover, or maybe into their hands, and then don't wash their hands. Yea, we have a lower pop density and far less public transit, and so we get away with it, but if we masked like Asians, cold and flu season would be way less bad. But our obese smoking/vaping types can't handle the inconvenience of the mask... and otherwise healthy Americans just can't be bothered. Americans wear CPAP masks in bed, not droplet masks when out.

SARS had IIRC a R naught of 3-4, which meant the average person who had the virus in turn infected 3-4 others. If this virus is also a Coronavirus like SARS then it might be comparable in that regard. The reservoir species for SARS was probably bats and they were found in a cave in Yunnan province which is in the extreme south of the country (next to Burma and Vietnam). There are large cave complexes in many parts of China, and the biggest is (I think) Yin Shui, which is about 70 miles from Wuhan. Anyhoo, China has a demonstrated history of under-reporting and I don't expect much different this time. |
