[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Thread Dedicated To U.S. Coronovirus; 25,000+ USA Cases/day 1,000+ Deaths/day (Page 6 of 33)

Yeah it doesn’t make sense to me that only 540+/- cases reported and yet every province in China is reporting infections. Tens of thousands of infections makes more sense. |

Yeah, that was the first thing that came to mind. 34,000 people died from influenza in the US last year and you guys are worked up over this? |

People are not catching a virus named "coronavirus". They are catching a virus that happens to be a coronavirus.
There are currently seven known coronavirus types. SARS was a coronavirus. MERS was a different coronavirus. This new one is named "2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)". A coronavirus is a virus that physically has a crown shape to its formation. It is that simple. Many reporters are writing and saying the wrong words. I share this to keep my AR15 colleagues mindful of this error to not repeat it. Say "people are catching a coronavirus with a ridiculously long name that has 2019 in it" or "people are catching a new coronavirus that was just recently identified". Please don't say "People are catching coronavirus" If you want to read more about the seven known coronavirus types, you can see https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/types.html A long term former team member who went to medical school and hates to see people say things incorrectly which are in areas that they happen to not know. |

That's the opposite of what the gov would do. It's pretty much the worst idea. You don't know who is contagious but not symptomatic. Look at 1917 Influenza if you want to see how things play out with draconian public health measures during a pandemic. They weren't rounding people up. Quarantines, travel bans, prohibitions on public gatherings, closing public venues, theaters, etc... Quoted:

That said, it is a crapshoot if government would allow such a thing. I could see them going door to door, rousting both sick and well people from their homes and putting them in one place "for safety". Look at 1917 Influenza if you want to see how things play out with draconian public health measures during a pandemic. They weren't rounding people up. Quarantines, travel bans, prohibitions on public gatherings, closing public venues, theaters, etc... Entire towns basically went on lockdown during the 1917 pandemic. Nobody in/out. People were a lot more self reliant back then too. Think about how many people don't even have their next meal at home, much less enough supplies to go a week or two without leaving the house. |

At this time all the talk is of over 1000 suspected cases 20 January - talk is now of confirmed cases 21 January - 330 confirmed cases 22 January - 540 confirmed cases So what is happening is that they started testing people and now the test results are coming back. |

Shut It Down!
For reference New York is the largest US City with a population over 8 million; Wuhan has a population of 11 million. QUARANTINED China coronavirus – Wuhan on lockdown as Government closes airport and shuts down all public transport THE city at the epicentre of the coronavirus has been put on lockdown with airports and public transport links set close tomorrow morning.
Residents in Wuhan, which has a population of 11 million, have been told not to travel, to avoid crowds and minimise public gatherings despite Chinese New Year being only three days away. Desperate residents wearing facemasks has become the norm, so much so that many stores have completely sold out, leaving many frantically searching online for supplies.
"DO NOT GO TO WUHAN" Our on the ground reporter, who is too fearful of the Chinese authorities to be identified, says there is little activity on the streets with people shutting themselves indoors. She said: “Only the main transport hubs, such as the airport and the train station indicate that this is a city of 11 million, as families jostle with their suitcases, eager to escape to their Lunar New Year destinations, the most important festival in the Chinese calendar, in case an all-out quarantine is enforced. "There’s a notable difference as soon as I land in Wuhan. In the airport, almost every single person, including staff, is wearing a face mask. "There’s hand sanitizer on every desk and some staff are wearing gloves. I walked through an infrared camera in arrivals but no one seemed to be paying any attention. |

So at what point do you button up the house and keep the kids inside, don't go to work, etc? I live and work in the NYC area. Waaaaaay too many people cough towards me during my commute to work. I have a few hundred masks to wear and throw away. |

Quoted: This. I doubt our government will have the balls to implement a quarantine when the time comes. Muh tourism industry, Muh trade, Muh immigrants, etc. Other parts of the conference: -They see stability in the pathogen with no rapid mutation concerns at the time but are trying to get more data. -They cannot confirm 3rd or 4th generation transmission of the pathogen but again are trying to get more data. -Most fatalities are of older demographic (70% over 40) and did have underlying health problems (40%) exacerbated by the pathogen. |

There are over 540 cases confirmed! The alternative hypothesis is what? That there was a very large number of zoonotic transmissions before human to human? This is the more contagious than measles? Listening as well... Troubling but not unexpected is you have these WHO leaders making public appeals at a press conference to China to "gib data!" |

There were college kids severely messed up in a local hospital and they were medivac to downtown Cincinnati hosp cause their resp was shutting down. I didn't leave then or hole up then. I think its a good point to review, what is the red line. My guess is good connections to a hospital would be a good starter. |

I'm just relaying what the committee is stating, this is pretty far outside my wheelhouse so if you're a SME I'm always glad to hear what's going on. I'll say this, I get the feeling they're being very cautious, and it's worth mentioning that the committee was split on emergency declaration. On the other hand, based on all the adulation they're giving, if the PRC was a person these guys would be lining up to give a blowjob. So it's possible they're trying not to piss them off. Yea it's really clear they are fellating PRC. I'm guessing PRC is pressuring them behind the scenes to both praise PRC and not to declare the emergency. |

Basic math says that’s approximately 4% without being able to calculate based on other factors. Chinese authorities are making certain to note the fatalities are those with compromised immune systems and/or other underlying health problems. I’m interested to know the rates of recovery. I live near a huge university with a significant population of ethnic Chinese. One thing I noticed during my time in grad school is the Chinese students in my program didn’t really exercise sanitary conduct- what I mean is they rarely covered their mouths when coughing or sneezing. They fired it off in close proximity to their peers. They also seemed to wash their hands before using the toilet but not after. So that might contribute to the rapid spread as much as anything. There are obviously many unknown variables at play regarding the infectiousness, but sanitation and personal hygiene may indeed be a major factor. That shows 543 xonfirmed, 138 suspected, last update 0937 22 Jan I wonder where this info is coming from and who is keeping it. |

For context, SARS-2003 had around 8900 cases. This appears to blow that out of the water, and China sat on their hands there as well. There are reported infections in Russia, Brazil, and Mexico now. Trying to be optimistic here, but containment is starting to seem like a longshot. Quoted:

If found, all that will do is put everybody on the plane in quarantine. It has an incubation from 4-7 days it looks like. There will be people that get off planes from china that will get sick and will spread it here and they will not have a fever when they get off the plane. The only way to stop it is to stop travel, and it is probably too late already. |

Can we just call this the Wuhan Flu or would that be too simple? N95 masks are still in stock at your local Home Depot. If you get the big box it runs around $.90 per mask. |

I like how the Chinese government says they're going to quarantine an entire city...24 hours before they do it, thereby allowing floods of people to abandon the city and potentially bring the virus with them outside of the quarantine.
I guess there's no other way to do it, because quarantining 11 million people seems kind of...impossible. |
