I seriously get goosebumps during this whole thing. It's just amazing.

It felt like a weird intersection of product placement and trolling to me.
“We can’t have the F-35C be the star airplane, but we can do this.” That said, whenever I think about that scene this is the song that comes to mind. Perhaps someday someone will edit the 2 together. Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Is In) |

I like Top Gun 2. The storyline is so simple, my 7 year-old niece was able to follow along easily.

There is a fascinating fan theory that goes, (I'll put in a spoiler tag even though you should have seen it by now)
Click To View Spoiler Maverick actually is dying after the plane breaks up, and everything after that is his subconscious' way of making all of the things that happened earlier in his life make sense and make amends. So getting to fly an F14 with Goose's son is his way of fixing what he broke. I actually love that theory. |

There's a lot of "it's in the script" i'm ok with for a fun movie but at some point when you start really just throwing all physics out the window I just kind of roll my eyes lol. |

I hear ya, but physics aside, the whole narrative point of the scene was to try to recapture that special something from the Right Stuff. Perhaps a bit manipulative of the audience, but if they do it well enough I'll allow it. I had the same feeling with the Tale of Two Cities reading at Bruce Wayne's 'funeral' in Dark Knight Rises - they did a good enough job that what could have elicited an eye-roll instead fit and supplemented the narrative. (For an unsuccessful attempt at another French Revolution reference being too on-the-nose, see the moment in the Honorverse where a character signs his name as Rob. S. Pierre. Ok, David Weber, we get it, it's Horatio Hornblower in space.) |

And then panting for breath as though the mask has been cutting off all oxygen somehow Not contradicting Hollywood silliness abounds, but the mental and physical stresses while maneuvering a jet like a dog fight or missile evasion are very well illustrated in the voice recordings of the F16 pilot evading SAM launches over Iraq, back during the no fly zone troubles after Desert Storm. Also in the recordings of the F14's shooting down the Libyans. Its some good listening... You can really get a whiff of the stress in the lead F14 pilot, "hes jinked BACK into me again!"..."fox 1!"...and the other one saying "awe jesus" Gulf Of Sidra 1989 F14 vs MiG23 F16 dodges 6 SAMs This one gave me chills the first time I watched it. |

The cringiest part of an intentionally cheesy movie. Yeah, well, the target audiences probably aren't ever going to see a 40 year old movie that bombed so bad it killed the studio that released it. It's not in the zeitgeist. Good movie though, and pretty much launched Ed Harris' movie career. On the other hand, Top Gun: Maverick is a sequel to a 37 year old movie that broke box office records, helmed by the most bankable living actor, and is a huge part of the 80's culture and beyond. And I give the Darkstar segment extra credit for bringing Ed Harris in. They knew what they were doing. |

There was also a Skunkworks UAV program called Darkstar with the 1st flight in 1996. The UAV Darkstar program was canceled in the late 90's. The UAV was not even supersonic.
