I remember from an old "aliens ufo files" type show they had recordings of radio traffic using experimental call sign "dark star" ivo Creech or one of those spooky areas. I think it ended up being the B2 or something.

Why would the Navy develop a land based hypersonic spy plane. Seems more like an airforce thing, amiright?

Had dinner with a retiring aerospace engineer in 2007 who was working on engines capable of Mach 10.
That’s all he knew and all he could say. Might not look like the one in the film but bet on there one already flying. |

That thing would have an approach speed of about 250 knots.... minimum. |

As I understand it , blowing the roof off the guard shack wasn't intentional but a happy accident .

Quoted: It felt like a weird intersection of product placement and trolling to me. “We can’t have the F-35C be the star airplane, but we can do this.” That said, whenever I think about that scene this is the song that comes to mind. Perhaps someday someone will edit the 2 together. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0-7fg8oAO4 View Quote They filmed all of the Top Gun 'pilots' in the back seat of an F-18 so their facial expressions could accurately depict g forces. F-35C has no back seat and they probably didn't want cameras in the cockpit. |

It's a cool sequence but it didn't really fit storywise.
The movie starts with the iconic carrier launch sequence but then immediately moves to Maverick in his hangar so it's a jarring juxtaposition. If you look at the original, its approach made more sense since the carrier launch transitions to Maverick/Goose in the air. |

The movies a masterpiece followup to the original. Anyone who disagrees is wrong and stupid...

The funny part is that probably happened in the mid 90s when that tech was new. But then again a white tic tac uav randomly moving a Mach Jesus in random direction doesn't make for good cinematography.

Has anyone explained why he starts to go into a turn at mach 10, instead of just flying straight?

Quoted: That sequence was the one part of the whole movie I had a hard time with lol. Mostly the ejection part. There's a lot of "it's in the script" i'm ok with for a fun movie but at some point when you start really just throwing all physics out the window I just kind of roll my eyes lol. View Quote The F14 sequence was awesome. I was so happy they did it. While watching I knew it was pure cheese and nostalgia, but I loved it. Brought a tear to my eye, for 14 year old me. View Quote Probably so he didn't run out of CONUS airspace and the base tracking him or overflying population centers. Keep in mind at Mach10 he was doing over 7,500MPH. And it probably wasn't a "sharp" turn, the SR-71 needed about 145 miles to make a 180 at speed, and this fictional plane was supposedly going 3 times as fast. |

Ahem. https://www.airforceheritageflight.org/news/2022/04/20/meet-the-pilot-bruce-doc-winter/ The Fighter Pilot Podcast late last year did an episode about the F4U. The guy who owned/flew it spent some time describing how he got qualified and insured to run the thing. Basically he had to get checked out on the P-51 first. There are no 2 seat F4U’s but there are 2 seat Mustangs. Moreover since there aren’t 2 seat Corsairs Maverick couldn’t fly off into the sunset with Penny in one. Never mind the fact that it was Cruise’s personal aircraft. |

There's a cool YouTube channel I subscribe to, Sam Eckholm, and he went to Skunk Works and spoke with them about the Dark Star. Not a real jet. You can actually touch an SR-71 at the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, KS. So very awesome the first time (and every time) I walk up and see that Black Bird. |

Quoted: I guess the movie did make the point that the newer generation is a lost cause? Brings in Maverick to teach, who only lasted a couple months as instructor originally. Basically the best pilot, but worst teacher imaginable. Proceeds to teach, but it's nothing more than showing the new recruits how good he is. Was there ever a scene where he taught anything? Then says they all suck and he'll do it himself. View Quote Also a real problem. I've known a few GenX who were of the mind "What? Me? I'm the best this outfit has left to teach/lead?" GenX being small, it was never going to be possible to pass on the same knowledge and skill in the same quantity that was present in the boomers, and there's only so much most millennials would ever be able to absorb and rise up early to. A demographic capability cliff that millenials/Genz will have to find their own way past. |
