It's mentioned earlier in the thread, but he was in the South Korean jail for assaulting a South Korean national.

Host nation police had him on assault charges and then turned him over to the Army. Not unusual for the host nation to turn over service members and say "you deal with it."

My roommate in Sicily was arrested by Italian police for drug smuggling and dealing, he spent a month in Italian jail before being turned over to the Navy. He then went through a Court Martial and spent time in the Brig ( which was much better than Italian jail.)

Yeah, sounds like this shitbird was arrested by S Korean police for assaulting Koreans. I read earlier he had been in a Korean jail for three months.

Ok, so they escorted him to Kimpo now know as Gimpo international airport.

When they should have sent him out of Osan AFB. His escort could have walked him onto the plane.
Then when he landed stateside. There would be another escort to take him to the next leg of his journey until he reached his final destination.

But someone assumed he was just going get on the plane and catch the connecting flights to Fort Bliss  and report in.

Months before he fled into North Korea, U.S. soldier Travis King faced two assault allegations and was fined by a South Korean court for damaging a police car, according to a court ruling and a lawyer who represented him.
The U.S. military was scrambling to establish the fate of King, who made an unauthorised crossing of the inter-Korean border into North Korea on Tuesday, throwing Washington into a new crisis in its dealing with the nuclear-armed state.

The Seoul court said on September 25 last year King punched a man in the face at a club several times but the case was settled.
Two weeks later, on October 8, police officers responded to a report of another altercation involving King, and tried to question him. He continued with his "aggressive behaviour" without answering questions from police, according to the court document.
Police placed him in the backseat of their patrol car where he shouted expletives and insults against Koreans, the Korean army, and the Korean police, the ruling said. During his tirade, he kicked the vehicle's door several times, causing about 584,000 won in damages, the ruling said...

1266 SK Won to the US Dollar.  So under $500.

News accounts around here are showing clips of Otto Warmbier when describing the situation, instead of using the Soldier's photo.  Hilarious.

I couldn't tell you whether or not this Administration will let it drop, or use this as an excuse to pay off Kim for another year.

There was a question upthread about why not have the shithead fly out of the US airbase instead of trusting that this guy would make ot back to the US without incident.  Especially since the guy had shown such great judgment in the past, and was going back to...what punishment, for those of you who've BTDT in JAG?  BCD from this?  Some other kind of OTH discharge?  Jail time in a military prison in the States?  (Which seems kind of unlikely.)

Anyway, it seems pretty damn dumb to think that this clown wouldn't make a further scene out in civilized society, if he thought picking a fight with South Korean cops was a good idea.  So why take the chance?  Couldn't spare the people?

So let me get this straight.  You have a shitbird that has disciplinary issues severe enough to send him back to the States, and likely bust him down in rank.  But instead of confining him to base or .mil jail, you let him go on a bus to the JSA?!  Where he can literally run into North Korea if he wants?  Maybe his CoC does deserve all of the ass-pain they're about to receive?

Wasn't a similar reason why one of the earlier three US defectors went to NK?  Because they were going to get jammed up at court-martial, and thought NK couldn't be worse than that?

Given his reported recent stay in a South Korean prison, I would think it would be easy to arrange for ROK cops to escort him from airport security to the gate, put him on the plane, and not leave until the plane was in the air.
