Modern MANPADS accelerate to around Mach 2 in a few seconds. Chasing down a subsonic cruise missile flying directly overhead is going to be a very quick affair.

View Quote There has been a lot of work to integrate the javelins clu to fire the stinger. The goal is to use the much better optics compared to the stingers night sight |

But the old hippies in regards to missile defense screamed a bullet can't shoot down a bullet.

Still want to see a drone drop an anti-tank mine on a hovering Ka-52.

Question for someone more knowledgeable than I am on the topic;
Does the Ukrainian fired missile have tracking capabilities or was that a very lucky shot? |

But why didn't the cruise missile just suddenly slow down and let the sam fly by?
Just kidding ETA: best website for these and drone/javelin/etc videos? |

Pretty cool
Didn't realize those things could lock on that fast, but my knowledge of antiaircraft weaponry is from video games and movies |

That would depend on the type of cruise missile. There are supersonic ones. |

Explosion when sam hits the cruise missile looks all wrong. All of the sudden there is a round ball of an explosion where you should of had a mach 2 missile exploding and shredding the cruise missile it was aimed at. It just looks like poorly done cgi.
At :042 there is a perfect explosion and the the laws of inertia go out the window and everything stops and drops straight down. Add in the "cameraman" loses the whole shot at just the "right" time and it just doesn't look right to me |

If the Russians were smart, they would launch that shit at night when manpad operators couldn’t use their MK-1 eyeballs.

“How did a missile traveling 1600 mph catch up to another missile only going 600mph?? It CANT. It’s FAKE. It’s Ukraine propaganda”
Ok geniuses… let’s say you’re speeding along on the highway and you’re doing 120 mph and you pass a cop car parked on the shoulder. Not long after, you see blue lights right behind you. How did that happen?? It shouldn’t be possible, right? |

This illustrates why hypersonic sea skimming antiship missiles are a big deal. If that missile was going mach 2 50 feet off the deck it would have gotten through.

There's a great vid from early in the Gulf War(s) of a reporter standing on the street, somewhere, doing his broadcast thing. He's about 30 seconds into it when one of our cruise missiles kind of casually hums by overhead...didn't look like it was doing more than highway speed. He was transfixed, kind of shocked.
They were wonder weapons for a long time. Looked for the clip on YouTube, it's nothing but Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine now. |
