Shouldn't the bear be hibernating? Why didn't Loki tell the wife to turn the bowl over so it is a hat? Pretty stupid.

Couple of thoughts on the characters. Using spoiler tags due to historical speculation.
Click To View Spoiler Rollo appears to be inspired by, if not intended to be Duke Rollo of Normandy. He was a Viking king who swore fealty to the Franks and became a Duke, settling on the mouth of the Seine to protect Paris against Viking raids. His descendants would include William of Normandy, the first Norman King of England. Aethelstan's kid Alfred appears to be Alfred the Great. He was the leader of Wessex who began the process of reclaiming England from the Danes. One of his great rivals was Ivar the Boneless, Ragnar's crippled kid, who lead the Great Heathen Army. |

Ragnar needs to stop fluki hanging around so much and let him get back to the ultra Violence.

am i the only guy who thought there was something significant about floki's posture while being tortured?
looked a lot like a crucifix. i wonder if ragnar was making a subtle point. |

I would bring a spear if I were going after a bear. I am not sure a dagger nor a hand axe would go deep enough, and I would want a bit of stand off distance. Going chest to chest with a bear with superficial wounds is pretty low on my list.
I thought Berserker left the keg of mead there so he would be east prey. I really expected a showdown by the fireside, or that when he finished puking he would look up and see a mountain with an axe coming down on him. |

i understand that, but i'm looking at the motivation. some aristocrats climb because they have a lust for power over other men, like earl haraldson (gabriel byrne), or kwinthrift. others climb because they want to accomplish something, and they need authority in order to do it (ragnar). still others want to have the biggest house in the neighborhood (ecbert). i don't see these motivations in standen's rollo. instead, i see an insecure guy who wants to win renown. to this point, he has shown no real interest in actually ruling people--almost a disdain for it. instead, he just wants to be recognized as a great warrior, and get the perks of that. given the choice between being caesar and being the greatest gladiator ever, IMO he would choose the latter. Rollo has the desire to rule, but lacks the patience and cunning. Strong in tactics but weak in strategy, he has a long way to go if he's to acquire the position history dictates. i don't know that he wants to rule, so much as he wants to be a rock star. i don't see a drive for political power in the guy--just a desire to be considered ragnar's equal. Rollo's role is based on Rollo, who eventually became ruler of Normandy. The series is following actual history fairly closely, so it's going to be interesting to see how they play this. Rollo has shown the Francia king a way to upend the Viking ships, so he's definitely got something up his sleeve. i understand that, but i'm looking at the motivation. some aristocrats climb because they have a lust for power over other men, like earl haraldson (gabriel byrne), or kwinthrift. others climb because they want to accomplish something, and they need authority in order to do it (ragnar). still others want to have the biggest house in the neighborhood (ecbert). i don't see these motivations in standen's rollo. instead, i see an insecure guy who wants to win renown. to this point, he has shown no real interest in actually ruling people--almost a disdain for it. instead, he just wants to be recognized as a great warrior, and get the perks of that. given the choice between being caesar and being the greatest gladiator ever, IMO he would choose the latter. This is not the first time Rollo went his own way and did his own thing at the expense, or exclusion, of Ragnar. He is a great warrior and, if given a chance, a shrewd leader in his own right. But, in Kattegat, he is forever eclipsed by Ragnar. I don't see him as insecure but rather as someone who is unfulfilled living in someone else's shadow. |

I don't see him as insecure but rather as someone who is unfulfilled living in someone else's shadow. i agree that he has undermined and even directly opposed ragnar, but IMO the only reason he has done this is out of insecurity. if he was merely unfulfilled and seeking validation, he would have gone out on his own and made his mark. instead, he has consistently tried to improve his own status by betraying ragnar instead of just doing his own thing. these are the actions of an insecure man. |

In some of the Norse mythology Berserkers were men that could transform into bears so i was actually half expecting that bear to be the berserker guy that was hired to kill Bjorn due to the odd stalking behavior. More typically however, Berserkers wore bear or wolf pelts and were said to gain bear like strength when fighting. Of course since Harbard was brought into the show the semi real/fantasy themes can be nicely blurred at times. |

Doesn't Bjorn mean "bear" in modern Scandinavian languages?
I considered the berserker/bear connection, but it's probably representative of some kind of "inner turmoil" or something along those lines. I never read into things correctly though. New episode in approximately 5 minutes. Should be interesting. Edit: Of course it could have just been a bear... |

Interesting turn with Floki and the dick resting groove chinned queen.
I like how Bjorn disemboweled the berserker then smelled his hands afterwards. Why didn't he settle the score with Horik's son? |
|
|
Bjorn is officially badass now. The Berserker died quicker than with a blood eagle, but the fish hooks and seeing his own guts pulled out before him was one hell of a way to go.
Rollo's wife Gisla could give Queen Kwenthrith a run for the money in the hornyness race. Ivar seems on track to fulfill his destiny with Floki teaching him to be a "real" Viking. The next episode should be epic. King Harald Finehair wants something Ragnar isn't going to let him have. Bjorn mortifying Horik's son by running off with his wife was better than killing him. Harbard (who knocked up Queen Aslaug) is Odin (Thor?) and when Siggy was in the water saving Aslaug's children, she saw her daughter and then Harbard, meaning that she was on the verge of entering Valhalla. She let herself be carried down into the water and then drowned. Also, Athelstan has made a few appearances since Floki killed him and his hands have bled several times after he was crucified. The Seer makes accurate predictions and ravens and eagles keep popping up just before something important is to happen. |

All in all a kickass episode.
**Possible spoilers if you haven't watched this episode** Berserker could have finished Bjorn off a few times, especially after disabling his hatchet, but the fishhooks and disemboweling saved that fight. Walking in, taking the guy's wife, and not even mentioning Berserker or the ring was like a Boss. The Chinese slave girl thread played out better than I expected. The horny French Princess is hilarious. Lots of tension building with the fat English King. Floki a Seer? |

View Quote Best I recall when Ragnar is killed by King Aiella(sp?) him and his sons aren't speaking, I think even one has declared war on him over some land or village or something. But when they hear what happened to their father they put all their differences aside and Ivar led the assault on England with Bjorn and the other by his side. Been a while since I read these sagas so I may be off a tad but that's the jist of it. Best I recall isn't it Ragnar's former best friend the Priest's son (what was his damn name?) that ends up beating them in at least one battle? The current King son does some serious fighting as well as I recall, the one who's wife was boned by the priest and his own dad. He's a badass. |

Don't like where they are taking floki and turning ragnar into a madman. |

Bjorn is coming into his own right now. Ragnar has been on him in the past about needing to use his head more - the fight with the berserker showed a shift towards creative thinking/ adaptibility once his main weapon was rendered useless.
The map made another appearance - maybe a trip of his own at the end of the season and into the next? Not sure he really knows Horick's son was the guy who sent the berserker. Yet. And I'm looking forward to seeing what happens when Lagertha finds out the earl was in on that little deal. I'm wondering if this may be the last season with Ragnar. |

How far down the line does Aella throw Ragnar into the snake pit?

Although starting a bit slow...
Ivar go bang with the axe, Lagertha go stabby with the knife, and Bjorn now knows who sent the berserker dude. Am I imagining it, or did the ice queen slightly raise her glass to Floki as he was getting chummy with the Finehair? |
