The thing about special needs kids that people dont realize is they end up being special needs adults , my son is involved with 4 or 5 groups and non profits  , they do a lot of activities together , they range in age from late teens to mid 60's , there is a lot of over lap between them , Im just starting to connect who is who from what group , also the people who work and are aides for these groups are without a doubt the most giving folks Ive ever met , at least the ones I encounter.  Its humbling to see folks give so much .

I intellectually know it's the right thing. Society has decided we will help those who can't help themselves.

But fuck this hurts my pride.
Pride has ruined many great men. Don't be that guy!

Trying and at least succeeding outwardly

Which I will take as a win while I keep the internal battle against  self raging

We as a society have an obligation to help those that cannot help themselves.

We, also owe nothing to those that are simply unwilling.

Nothing to be ashamed of or worry about, AJ.

Big difference between can’t and won’t.

Eventually, he will be an orphan. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but eventually, he will have a child’s capacity for taking care of himself and parents who are unable (for whatever reason) to do so. We are called to take care of widows and orphans. It’s as simple as that.

But we will grin, bear it, make jokes to blow off steam, and every now and then have a bad day where we want to drink it all away.

Depends on how functional he is.    At least better than a friend of mine who's son "gets migraines" they've been paying all his bills for over a decade.   But he's just lazy.  They have been trying to get him on assistance now.   But he is capable of working.

My boy’s biggest things are his executive function skills and ability to stay focused.

He qualifies for a job coach to help him prep for interviews and help teach him how to do the job. So far that has netted him 3 interviews and only 1 job offer that he is not a good fit for.

My cousin who is a few years older is in an institution in southern NJ. No way he's ever gonna be able to live on his own. My aunt and uncle (and my other cousin, her husband, and their two kids) live close to him, so they can visit often. It's a good facility, but he got to be too much to handle when he was in his teens, and started getting stronger. His outbursts were getting dangerous. I remember visiting when he was maybe 12 or 13, and he'd just pick stuff off the table and throw it. He did like playing, though and I got along with him pretty well.

I have a cousin in a facility. He’s a couple years younger than me, but has the brain function of a 6 month old. He’s been there since he was about 10 for the same reasons.
